Mosquitoes are already hatching in stagnant waters of the Willamette Valley like these ponds near the Delta Highway. Yet the county's minimal spray program has yet to get underway. There's $44,000 in the till for vector control, but vector control officer John Calecrate told the commissioners that would tackle only 1% of the worst mosquito problem in years if the county uses the expensive BTI bacterial spray. We're going to be out there doing something that's probably just a drop in the bucket, a piece of sand on the ocean. Calecrate says he could do a lot more if he's allowed to use chemical pesticides like Malafion. But for now, it's still county policy to stick with the bacteria, if the county sticks with anything at all. The commissioners decided that treating 1 percent of the problem might not be worth the expense and directed staff to use some of the available money to keep a vector control officer on board next fiscal year. That position was eliminated in the preliminary 8384 budget. Funding that position leaves even less money for action, and acting administrator Margaret Mahoney predicted there would be no spray program at all this spring.
