It involves the slipping of the automatic transmission into reverse when the driver thought the car was idling in park. At a minimum, some 10 million Ford vehicles, years 1973 through 1980, are potentially affected by the problem. And at worst, some 23 million vehicles dating back to 1966 may be involved. One government agency says at least 100 deaths and thousands of injuries can be traced directly to this problem. Ford recently set out these dull-colored dashboard labels, warning people to put the gear firmly in park, set the brake, and turn off the engine. Now, a House Ways and Means subcommittee has also passed the bill, but the subcommittee recommends no state funds to help pay the cost of the new judges. Normally, the State pays the county $65,000 per judge. Lane County wants the state to add to that, but the Subcommittee is recommending that even the basic subsidy be dropped. Commissioners rejected that idea unanimously. Bye! And for the third time, the county went on the record against any new judges unless the state's willing to pick up the tab. Commissioners are also very interested in another Senate-passed bill. This one, Senate Bill 515, goes before the House Intergovernmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday. It would make it legal for counties to use the interest on their road funds to help pay for county general services. Lane County just lost a court battle on that issue, and it stands to lose a million dollars from next year's budget. That's one of the reasons Bob Oliver cites when he talks about owning quarter horses. Bob just spent the past two years building so-so into a going concern. He left Scottsdale, Arizona, he says, because it just wasn't as nice as Oregon, for the horses or for himself. His six million dollar commitment here in Pleasant Hill is built on quarter horses. This new eruption of thick, blocky lava pushed up through cracks in the old dome, spilling over on the northwest side, adding a sort of craggy cap. Four distinct lobes now make up the lava dome. Geologists believe the sticky volcanic rock emerged through the center, each time taking a different route, with last week's eruption sprouting on top and to the west. Many of the sensitive instruments used to monitor movement in the crater were damaged by falling rock and debris. Several geologists spent the day inside the crater, working to repair the equipment and to measure the new growth. The primary focus of the US Geological Survey is to assess the hazards of the volcano and determine what it will do next. A close look at the dome from the west shows three distinct lobes. The December lobe on the right. The April lobe on the left and the new lobe on top. Two large cracks on the new surface look almost like dried bread dough that's been cut with a knife, the only relatively smooth surface on the otherwise craggy dome. A full scientific description of the new dome growth is still several days away, as geologists take samples of new rock, analyze gasses, and measure the new low. They were using a technique called belay leapfrogging. At the time of the accident, visibility was only 50 feet and winds were gusting. Several in the climbing party lost their footing, slid into the others, and ten people tumbled over 2,000 feet down the steep slope of the mountain to the top of the plane at Elliott Glacier. The Mazama's Mountain Climbing Club is still investigating that accident. An aerial view of the accident site on Mount Rainier showed no sign of the 11 climbers buried when huge blocks of ice broke off a glacier sundae burying them. The ice is now covered with fresh snow.
