He spent four years in the U.S. Congress as a representative from Oregon. Most recently, he's been practicing law in Eugene. Porter's a candidate who's been raising the stink about Packwood's campaign fundraising letter. He sees the senator as a slave to special interests. Porter would cut federal spending, initiate gas rationing, begin a massive alternative energy program, and impose temporary wage and price controls. Short-term wage and price controls are also favored by Ted Kulingowski, a six-year veteran of the Oregon legislature. Kulongowski is a local attorney who also accuses Packwood of catering to special interests. He's opposed to the draft and wouldn't go to war over Mideast Oil, would draft a comprehensive energy policy stressing alternative fuel sources. He'd ensure educational rights for the handicapped and supports a national health insurance program. That idea also draws support from John Sweeney. The Portland resident, a relative newcomer to politics, is an urban forestry specialist. He supports the draft and would enlarge the military, saying that would solve our security and unemployment problems in one fell swoop. Sweeney favors a balanced budget and also an overhaul of the tax system, a primary concern, cutting crime. He says one problem is our overcrowded prison system and that what's important is the certainty of punishment, not the length. Former Oregon legislator Jack Sumner also wants Packwood's job. A rancher and investor, Sumner would fight inflation by cutting interest rates in half, balancing the budget, and slashing taxes. He'd push for alternative and synthetic fuel development, but not hire fuel taxes or rationing. Sumner says the military budget can be rearranged to provide better security, does not need to be increased. He opposes a peacetime draft. Sumner calls himself an independent politician who is, quote, tough enough for the times. The last candidate to round out this race is Gene Arvidson, president of an equipment sales company in Eugene. He says he's had extensive international trade experience. Arvidon supports nuclear power, tax cuts, and increased military budget and draft registration for both men and women. He does not support the ERA, however, and also opposes gas rationing and wage and price controls. For Eyewitness News, this is Lisa Stark reporting. One of the most damaging accusations that the senator made false statements in a campaign fundraising letter that he claimed anti-abortionists have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to defeat him. Packwood denies the charge. The senator does support free choice for women and the Equal Rights Amendment. He's running on his record, an alternative energy act, increased defense spending, reforestation funding. His record is under attack from opponents. Brenda Jost claims Packwood's a Democrat in Republicans' clothing. The vice chairwoman of the Oregon State Republican Party, Jost would reduce government regulation, balance the budget, shore up defense, and decentralize government. She does not support the ERA. Neither does Rosalie Huss, an officer of the Christian School Foundation. Huss says a vote for her is a vote for the right. For Ken Brown, the campaign's issue is censorship. His voters' pamphlet statement was rejected as anti-Semitic. It's stated in part that Americans faced disaster directed by Jewish Zionism, which Brown claims controls the banks, government, and media. Brown would halt all credit and some trade with communist nations, would rebuild US military power, clamp down on aliens moving into the US, and would reduce regulation on the oil industry. He's a feisty man who accuses the Democrats of acting like renegades and blames them for inflation and deficit spending. Fitzgerald, a public relations consultant, ran for Congress two years ago losing to Jerry Lawsman in the primary. He's in good with the timber industry, particularly for his pro-herbicide stand. And a look at his campaign contributors will reveal lots of mill owners and lumbermen. Here's his stand on major issues. His number one priority is the creation of jobs. He favors nuclear power development. He wants to strengthen our defense budget. Budget for the federal government, and he is against the Equal Rights Amendment. Three-term Congressman Jim Weaver has spent little time or money campaigning. As an incumbent, though, he's used his political office recently to be more in touch with voters in his district, mainly pushing certain legislation. His positions are consistent with previous campaigns. He's advocated a balanced federal budget for last three years. He favors the conservation of energy resources and is opposed to the development of nuclear power. He is also opposed to the use of phenoxy herbicides in federal forests. He wants to stop log exports and advocate slash utilization. And finally, he feels the federal government should work to stimulate the housing market. Shriners arrived on scooters green and shiny, while others drove cars that looked kinda tiny. This classic portrait fit right in the scene, because All American Family was the festival theme. And pretty ladies, of course there were plenty around. And Miss Tina Card wore the festival crown. Well, the Florence Booster Club had gotten all this underway, and I asked the president, Maury Robertson, if he would just say, with all of the visitors, how big did Florence get? A triple of what it normally is, I bet. One group of spectators called themselves the Free Souls. And with their loud bikes and loud manners, they were watched by patrols. But tensions were few and little trouble made because folks of all kinds like to watch a parade. Back on the route these high steppers went by. And a family saying, hey, give hot tubs a try. This fellow's dressed so well, he couldn't look finer. And while this guy's not young, I think he's a minor. Well, parades are for kids, and I'm sure you can guess.
