After testifying here, I'm considered a snitch. In the joint, the code of the con is don't tell on anyone. Outside the courtroom, prosecutor Brian Barnes agreed if we send him back to the pen, he's dead. During cross-examination, an agreement was disclosed between Barnes and Bruno in exchange for his testimony. It says nothing Bruno has said in this trial can be used against him and that the DA will recommend he be moved to another prison. Earlier, the jury missed some unusual verbal fireworks when Melevin put prosecutor Barnes himself on the stand. The defense lawyer was trying for a mistrial because he was not informed beforehand of Bruno's testimony. The bad blood between the two lawyers was obvious as Meleven asked the judge to make Barnes more responsive to his questions. The judge agreed and said explanations Barnes wanted to offer could be brought out during his cross examination of himself. That ought to be interesting, said Judge Beckett. The mistrial was denied. Johnny Bruno's lawyer was next on the stand. He told the court that in a conversation, Melovan had said he thought he knew where the body parts are. I asked Melovan about it outside court. Hardly a day has gone by in Leonetti Haynes' trial for murder in which some new item has not surfaced to surprise courtroom spectators. The crime itself is one of the most grisly this county has seen. The state alleges that a woman was stabbed and butchered by her husband and two acquaintances during a drunken orgy. Only three pieces of her body have ever been found. Mrs. Haynes is allegedly one of three killers. The basis for her defense is her claim of amnesia regarding the night of the killing in February 1978, and the state's alleged lack of proof. The basis of the state case are statements Mrs. Haynes allegedly made identifying body parts and a butcher knife and admitting her guilt. But the defense had a major setback two days ago when Johnny Bruno, already convicted of the killing, surprised the court by identifying Mrs. Haynes as his accomplice. Mason admitted killing his wife Sandra on Mother's Day, 1979. Mason told the court he confronted his wife with a loaded gun and asked her she wanted him dead. She tried to take the gun from him and it went off killing her. Mason will be sentenced early next year. I'm Bob Zagorin. John Paul Schroeder's desperate try for freedom began late Friday night, October 17th. Schroedter apparently punched a hole in his cell window with a small wrench. He then lowered himself to the ground with a rope made of bedsheets. Schroder eluded a police dragnet and headed south in a stolen pickup. For two weeks, the escaped felon hid and worked in the mountains of southern Oregon. A tip led police to the area, but Schrodinger once again slipped through a stakeout. At that point, he was on foot and an intensive manhunt was mounted. For two more days, Schroeder kept moving through the brush and timber, staying out of sight. Dozens of trackers aided by dogs surrounded the area and closed in. Finally, the day after Halloween, Lane County Sheriff Dave Burke spotted Schroedter on a remote road and chased him into the brush until he gave up. Ironically, Schrodter was within yards of once again slipping through police lines and getting away. Schroder's now housed in the state penitentiary and his future trials have been moved to Salem. I'm Bob Zagoran. The University of Oregon athletic probe split the community like no other issue in recent times. A total of 13 current and former players and coaches were indicted by a special Lane County grand jury. They included two former basketball coaches indicted for theft of university travel funds, seven football players indicted for theft using phony telephone credit cards, and four football players, including the current tailback, Dwight Robertson, indicted on charges of first degree sodomy. Charges and countercharges flew back and forth. The athletic department claimed the district attorney, police investigators, and the media were picking on the athletes. The authorities said the athletic department was not cooperating with the investigation. District attorney Pat Horton said the community was willing to overlook crime in order to have a winning football team. By year's end, none of the indictments had resulted in convictions, but the cases involving alleged sex crimes are still to come to trial.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70258/file/156202#t=1097.58,1256.69
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70258/file/156202/transcript/86278/annotation/31
Speaker 12: This man is believed to be the so-called ski mask rapist who terrorized women in Eugene for over two years. John Paul Schroeder was arrested by police in February, charged with numerous sexual offenses. The Oak Ridge resident has steadfastly maintained he's innocent. But in June, a Lane County jury disagreed, finding him guilty of sodomy and burglary. Then in July, Schroedter was convicted of attempted rape. With seven cases to go, Schroders attorney John Halpern had him committed to the state mental hospital for testing. He was found fit to stand trial. Judges then slapped the convicted felon with two consecutive 20-year prison terms, each one carrying a 10-year minimum sentence. Schroeder's attorney has now successfully argued that the rest of his client's trials be moved to Salem because of extensive publicity here, much of that stemming from an ultimately futile leap for freedom. But that's another story. I'm Lisa Stark. What may go down in the history books as one of the most brutal murders ever in Oregon came to trial this year twice. Manuel Cortez was accused of torturing, sexually abusing, and killing two 11-year-old Ashland girls nearly one year ago. The case was moved to Lane County because of pretrial publicity in southern Oregon. In his first case, Cortez, was tried on only one of those charges. Prosecutors linked Cortez to the slang through a bloodstained quilt, as well as fingerprints found on the girl's tennis racket. A dramatic tape confession was played, in which Cortez admitted to the slang. Defense attorneys admitted Cortez did kill the girl, but said it was not intentional. That argument and concern about a possible death sentence apparently convinced two jurors to hold out for manslaughter. After more than 13 hours of deliberations, the jury gave up, and the judge declared a mistrial. Cortez was allowed a new lawyer and a new defense, one of mental defect. And this time around, he was tried on both charges. Psychiatrists for the prosecution argued Cortez with anti-social but not mentally ill. On top of that, the defense's psychiatric witness admitted he had never examined the defendant and that it was possible, but not probable, that Cortez had a mental defect. The jury was out only two and a half hours. The verdict, guilty of murder on both counts. Cortez is expected to be sentenced in January. He could get the death penalty. Eyewitness News played an important and leading role in uncovering the multi-million dollar county land exchange in which Wood was found to have used his commission seat to assure tidy profits for two friends. The trial lasted three weeks and included dozens of witnesses, many of whom flatly contradicted each other on the details of meetings and events. The county wanted to acquire some property adjacent to its fairgrounds, but with no money, its only option was to trade. That was done with two county properties, one on 30th Avenue in Eugene, one on North Coburg Road. The 30th Ave. Land was sold as soon as it had been traded away, for half a million dollars more than the county had gotten for it. Commissioner Wood made promises to the buyer, and later, laughed about them. The trial was notable not only for length, but also for the speed of the judgment against Wood, Thank you very much.
