Judge Beckett said the defense itself had paved the way for such inquiry with its own character witnesses. On the stand today, Mrs. Haynes admitted she had used welfare money, which she had gotten by lying, to buy a $90 diamond ring three days after the alleged murder. She said she had often gone with her husband to dispose of the hide and waste parts of poached deer. She said they would put the parts in garbage bags and leave them in dumpsters around town.
