The hard-to-place program begins a regular routine this month. Their second meeting will be Thursday night at 730 at the Children's Services Division office. But if the first meeting is any indication, the term hard- to-place children may disappear entirely from Eugene because every adopted kid will have a permanent and happy home. This house has been built into the hillside and is almost totally underground. Oh, no, that's okay. You're the star, aren't you? Well, when you talk about an underground house, that's what I figured was going to be an underground one, and I wasn't too anxious to move in. Is the City of Eugene or Lane County prepared for any sort of nuclear emergency? I'll have the answer to that question tonight on Eyew Witness News at 6. This is David Jackson for Eyewitness News. Eugene's hard-to-place adoption program enters Phase 2 this week. We'll tell you about it at 6 o'clock. No matter how hard you try to prevent it, accidental poisonings do happen. But when they do, you wanna be prepared. There are a couple of things that you can keep in your medicine cabinet in case of an accidental poisoning. What's the plan? What's my plan? Yes, can you give me the name of the product? Do you have the bottle right there handy? If I didn't think about it, I wouldn't have it. To the grass on both sides of the road. Well, it's anticipated the bomb's not going to drop in Lane County or on Eugene. So the information would be put out via the news media and for the people to go to a particular area, whichever is closer to them, such as schools, courthouse, university, so forth, for fallout shelters, as well as their own home in this crawl state. Once they got there, would there be any supplies for them to use? No, there would be no supplies. Well, it was something I was very worried about. I had this child, a 10-year-old child, that I wanted to find a good adoptive home for. And I was concerned. There aren't that many people that are willing to take 10- year-old children. And I wanted it to find the best possible home for this child. Are you right now real happy with what's happened to that child? I'm very happy. I think we found an outstanding young couple that has taken this youngster in. I'm sure it must be done other places or has been done before. I think we're the only ones doing it right now in our agency and this is kind of a trial thing that we're doing to see can we move these children into placement and can we move them in faster. Now we're standing on your roof, what are we standing on here? Well, we're standing on about, uh, whole course labs put out by Morse Brothers in Albany and waterproofed a roof. And then there's two inches of styrofoam on top of that. And then you go to about, oh, 30 inches of dirt, feathered out to about a foot. Hi. Hi. Oregon State Police have been cracking down on speeders up and down I-5 this week, but there's one Eugene lady who doesn't like the way they've been doing it. She says at certain spots they've using privately owned cars as unmarked radar cars instead of regular cruisers like this one. She doesn't like it and she's gone right to the top with her complaint The only people that I have for some reason that they decided that they didn't want safe vehicles which are equipped with safety devices such as We do not use private vehicles for radar cars as the superintendent's policy. I think we would look nice. A few showers of partial clearing this evening. Partly Sunday, Thursday after late night and morning fog. This 47 cent box of simple baking soda may mean the end to impaired growth in children that suffer from a kidney disease known as renal tubular acidosis. The kidneys fail to get rid of the normal amount of acid in the body system because they are lacking certain enzymes necessary for normal function. He has that, well, there's calcium out in the ingredients. Now the other thing is, you're all right. It looks pretty much great. It was taken out of four, but then I was in jail. The tension should be increased and wood should be attached to the shaft partly. So yeah, I want one, but I don't know what one is. But I actually did work in physicality, because I just never used it. So now it's up to Dick Hayes and the Lane County Commissioners to try to come up with a solution to the problem that pleases everybody, or at least as many people as possible, because it seems in the case of smokers' rights versus non-smokers' right, sometimes you just can't win. He admitted that the state puts the insurance on these vehicles and that they are equipped with special radar equipment. What's your objection to the use of private cars? I'm a private citizen and they don't insure my car and I don't feel like my tax money should go to insure another private individual's car. I'm going to talk to Catherine tonight, to record Catherine's speech meeting, and have the record that we have already. Probably out of this office, we had. We're just trying to live our problems. I would think so, yes. I think it's just one more of the areas that government gets involved into labor or other businesses where I feel very strongly they shouldn't even be involved. And it's one of those freedoms that we have always had and I don't think we should give it up. Is it the kind of thing that's worth fighting the government all the way to the end for? I certainly think so. Yes, you bet. And at that particular juncture. Well, I guess you just don't know the style of me. Is it a matter of style or hours and hours of practice? Mostly luck, I guess. I don't know. I haven't practiced much. How much uh... Time during the week uh... During the contest have you put in shooting free throw Well, I usually practice about two hours a night after dinner. I probably put in about 10 hours a week. Well, what I have suggested to the Lane County Board of Commissioners is they review the issue and determine whether or not they wish to make a recommendation or a pass or make a policy for the county. And in doing that, I have suggest that they run it through the department heads as a group and through the staff team as a groups. And because it is an issue that affects everyone, that everyone should have an opportunity to contribute to whatever that decision is. Well, baking soda is basically an alkaline substance, and it corrects the acid that's filled up in the blood. It tends to counteract the acid to maintain the acid-base balance of the blood more toward normal. Thank you very much. Dittrick surrendered to Eugene police about 9.45 here this morning. Yeah, let's put him away. Ready to go. Set. Go! Alright! When I woke up at midnight, I looked across the street, just pulling the blind a little bit, and I saw the office was all lit up. So that was unusual, and I thought a lot of movements. Then I saw them bringing people in. And I was concerned about these senior citizens because most of them are quite elderly over there. And I thought I should take some blankets or something over. Then I knew they wouldn't let me go across the streets. I just stayed in the house and then I watched them take the people out about, I don't know what time, and apparently took them to a hotel. We're going to be very patient and wait. And we'll wait for him to come out. Hopefully, he'll come out in the next five minutes. But if it's the next 5 days, we'll be here waiting for him. The whole object is to make sure that nobody gets hurt, including him. Well, I'm paying more from my doctor's office for an office call. I'm payin' about three and a half more a call. And I don't know how much more of my medicine has gone up. I never checked, but it has gone. The price of groceries increased, the price of meat increases, and all our rents increased, and taxes increased, so why shouldn't Social Security the benefits? Because after all, we paid into Social Security for many years before we reaped any benefits. Here it has no vigor. The plugs that have been ordered, I've seen some of them try to get them started. They do not compete with our native, our locally adapted grasses. And they do not stay green after the first frost. We need to continue our leadership in research and development, which is an abstract idea. It's very tough for the layperson to understand where billions of dollars of research money go when they don't understand the scientific concepts behind it and they don t see a physical product immediately and it's the most difficult of products to sell. Building up their muscles so they can fly the distance. We use the food and the water in the loft as an incentive to home. They have the natural ability to home How do you psych up a bird for some race like this? Well, I'll take mine out of the loft and keep them in one of the training cages all day.
