They look at it as a piece of furniture instead of a dying, drying out tree. Did you know that a Christmas tree is composed of 70% cellulose and 30% other things? And that the other things contain turpentine and cellulase is a combustible material used to make paper and explosives. As the tree dies, these constituents play a bigger and bigger role in the burning of that tree should it become ignited. Ignition of a dry Christmas tree is relatively easy and the burning is rapid. In a matter of a few seconds, the complete tree can become engulfed in flames, produce very high temperatures, and certainly reach the ceiling of any average-sized room. We're talking about full involvement of the tree in less than a minute, probably about 45 seconds. Some artificial trees are made to resist ignition and flaming, but that resistance varies depending upon the materials that are used to make the artificial tree. It's difficult for consumers to identify trees that provide significant resistance. One way is to look for the UL label. The important point is, whether it's a natural or an artificial tree, the same precautions apply. Check your tree lights for broken sockets or bulbs, frayed or missing insulation, and loose connections. If there's any damage, don't use them. Never use Christmas tree light strings on a metal tree. A broken wire, frayed insulation, or other problems could electrify the entire tree. Keep the tree away from open flames of any kind and from heat sources. With an actual tree, keep the bottom of the tree trunk covered with water. Don't leave children unattended around the Christmas tree. Turn off the Christmas Tree lights before going to bed or leaving the house. If you don't have a smoke detector, we would make a first rate. Under state law, it's Lane County's responsibility to make sure development in this area conforms to the LCDC's goals and guidelines. This was a nagging problem for everyone involved in the Metro plan. Lane County finally adopted a complex ordinance to protect the city's interests in the area. That was the last obstacle to gain LCDC approval of the plan, but now that ordinance has become an obstacle in itself. A number of landholders have filed suit saying the ordinance violates their constitutional rights. Currently a landowner can only develop an additional 50 percent of his land currently under use without both Lane County and Eugene's approval. Along with that approval must come a guarantee that the landowner won't fight annexation by the city. The landowners want that ordinance changed and the two and a half million dollar request for damages is their lever.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70493/file/156439#t=2396.21,2443.77
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70493/file/156439/transcript/86490/annotation/101
Speaker 23: I think our goal is not necessarily to get the money, we would just like the ordinance change so that we can live with it and that the land retains its basic value as industrial land.
