There's no reason to leave this space fallow until next year's corn goes in though because there's lots of things that you can plant right in this space that will grow over the winter. First thing to do of course is get out this year's crop. If you got it out soon enough, you should probably be able to chop it right into the soil. If you waited a little too long like I did, it should go on the compost pile instead. If you're going to put two crops in one place in the same year, though, you're gonna have to add a little bit of a nutrition to the soil. Before I put these winter broccolis in, I like to put a handful of chicken manure down here in the soil, and it gives it a much better chance for success. After you've mixed the chicken manure into the soil well, all you've gotta do is just go and get to sprouted the plants. I'm using a purple sprouting broccoli here, and I should be able to pick this in about February or March. And finally, to keep weeds from taking over the spot where you want broccoli to grow, go ahead and get some leaves, and you can mulch all around your plants, that'll cover the soil, keep it nice and moist, and by February, you'll be eating. This is also a good time of year to put leeks in the ground. You can get sprouted plants at a nursery now, and all you wanna do is just bury them in about three or four inches deep, maybe a little deeper if you've got longer leeks. The key here is just leave just a little bit of the top sticking out of the ground Most of your early crop of peas, I'm sure, have died by now, but it's easy to put in a second crop of Oregon snow peas. And if you want to get some lettuce in this time of year, you can either use transplants, that's probably going to be more successful.
