If DMS is only legal for human use when it's prescribed by your doctor under limited conditions, why aren't these ads illegal? Simply because DMS can be sold, as it has been since the 1940s, under the label of an industrial solvent. Its industrial use was so widespread that by the time DMSO became known as the aspirin of the 20th century, a cure-all, it was too late to prevent everyone and anyone from getting a hold of it. We decided to find out just how easy it would be to buy and sell DMSL illegally. Salem disk jockey Eddie Edwards agreed to help us out. We asked Eddie to pose as a DMSO customer at this converted hamburger stand, now a D.M.S.O. Outlet in North Salem. For $20, Eddie had no trouble at all buying eight ounces of the drug. It was from under this Ford pickup truck that a couple spotted a man late last night that authorities suspect might have been escaped prisoner John Paul Shroeder. Within minutes after the escape alarm, a second sighting on this road above the Calkins house convinced authorities to seal off the area between 4th Street and the river. Lincoln and High. Soon after the alert was given, shortly before midnight last night, an intensive manhunt was mounted in the area on and surrounding Skinner's Butte. And by 10 o'clock this morning, close to 100 law enforcement officers from the Eugene and Springfield Police Departments, Lane County Sheriff's Office, and the Oregon State Police were on the job. While a chopper circled overhead, patrols combed with a thick brush on the Butte and searched the banks of the Willamette River, both from the shore and from the water. What makes authorities so sure that Schroeder remains in the downtown area? Eugene Police Sergeant Jim Rivers told eyewitness news that the perimeter of the search area was set up so tightly and so soon after the first two sightings, that he feels comfortable concentrating on that area. Almost exactly a month ago, Schroeder was convicted of sodomy, attempted rape, and burglary. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison and remained in custody awaiting trial on additional sex charges. It was about 11.35 Friday night when a correctional officer on his way to work observed this rope-like device hanging from the jail's second story. Sheriff's authorities are speculating that Schrodinger used a wrench, somehow smuggled into the jail to break the glass in a window in his cell. He then covered the broken glass with a blanket and made his way across the second story roof where he used the sheets to repel down a wall.
