Since 1980, Schizik has recognized that the calmer waters just above the rocky bottleneck contained long stretches of potential spawning grounds And so he set about trying to promote a ladder to the Upper Falls area. At the time, the land necessary for the ladder was owned by Georgia Pacific. And Skizik took his concept to GP's forest resource manager, Bob Klein. The planks are strategically placed inside the ladder to slow down the rushing water. Although the creek boils on the surface, Skizik says the long planks create calmer conditions at depth. And he predicts the new ladder will create fisheries both along the upper Little Fall Creek and the Oregon Coast. This piece is going to go on the back of a man's leather jacket. I have to get like different shades and tones of the same. And put them together to give the illusion of like a painted, mixed coloring. It's pretty much of a new, innovative treatment of beadwork compared to the traditional uses it's had in the past among Indian people. Well, I started doing this beadwork since I was about 10 years old. I learned it from my family. We always used to do it to make our own dancing outfits that we used in powwows and ceremonials. I feel like what I'm doing in a way is like making a statement on the state of this particular art, you know, usually it's confined to trinkets and reproductions of older pieces, but I feel I'm closer to a more traditional thinking because even back in the get new techniques or designs from other tribes. A lot of what I identify as my style of art is always looking for something new, something innovative, but still using the same materials and techniques that just haven't been explored. Almost like a bridge between cultures, I use the traditional Indian technique and ideas fall at the same time not. Being afraid to draw upon elements of the dominant society's culture to put them together as one. Well, I still want to pursue bead work a lot. I think there's a lot of unexplored territory for the applications of bead work. I'd like to eventually even make a movie where everything's beaded in it, and have a house where everything is beaded. Beads are taking over.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71064/file/157015#t=318.7,457.98
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71064/file/157015/transcript/88407/annotation/12
Speaker 8: To the best of my ability, so help me God, do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States of America.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71064/file/157015#t=476.72,487.36
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71064/file/157015/transcript/88407/annotation/13
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71064/file/157015#t=490.44,490.94
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71064/file/157015/transcript/88407/annotation/14
Speaker 10: I'd like to save that until January 5, when we have the swearing in for my position. It was then that the Oregon Salmon Development Corporation, a group of private investors, began piecing together a deal to acquire Oroqua. Contacted by us by telephone, Oroqa operations manager Dick Severson said that the consortium apparently had some trouble putting together the financing to swing the purchase of facilities.
