The death penalty would be executed in the Oregon State Penitentiary by means of the gas chamber. Opponents of the measure say capital punishment is itself a crime against humanity. The superintendent of the Oregon state penitentiaries, Hoyt Cupp, argues that the penalty is applied unfairly, mostly to the poor. Every man I've helped to strap in the chair has had a court appointed lawyer, Cupp says. The ones with fancy lawyers get off. Today I went to the Koinonia Center at the University of Oregon to talk with Chaplain Doug Hunneke. Hunnecke served for three years on the chaplain's staff at San Quentin, and he was there in 1976 when a black man, Aaron Mitchell, was executed for killing a Sacramento policeman during a robbery. That was one of the country's last executions, and Hunneckes hopes it stays that way.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69535/file/155946#t=1326.22,1405.19
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69535/file/155946/transcript/84184/annotation/35
Speaker 18: Demeans us as a human community.
