Well, anyways, I've decided to flash you some of the best fruit and vegetable buys this week. Let's look over and see what we're getting locally in the vegetable market. First of all, we're going to get some very nice spinach, green leaf, red leaf lettuce coming in now locally. Also zucchini, yellow squash, beautiful snow white cauliflower, beets, peas, all coming in locally. The vegetable crop locally coming on strong. This wet weather hasn't hurt the vegetables too much. What it is hurting a little bit are these local strawberries that are coming in. Strawberry crop is coming on strong. If the weather continues to be wet, we won't see as good of a strawberry crop. Wet weather strawberries just don't mix, but if we do get some clearing you'll see good prices on strawberries in a wonderful local crop. Now let's switch over to fruit totally where we see we've got navel oranges now going out of season, Valencia oranges coming in. I'm going to show you the difference. Here your navel orange are a thick skin, seedless orange, better for eating than for juicing, a lighter colored meat. Your Valencia orange on the other hand, a much thinner skin, few seeds, navels have no seeds of course, darker meat, much better for juice. Navels are on the outs right now. Valencias are coming in, so you can look for Valencia oranges to be on the market real soon. Finally, in the fruit department, seedless grapes out of California now coming in. Sugar content's finally gotten them to be sweet. They're about two bucks a pound, a little expensive, but they are available now. So all in all, a good week for fruit and vegetable lovers. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terrence Potassium. OK.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70300/file/156244#t=175.02,267.72
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70300/file/156244/transcript/86251/annotation/13
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70300/file/156244#t=460.5,461.22
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70300/file/156244/transcript/86251/annotation/14
Speaker 5: This one's not working either. In recent weeks, the anti-nuclear outcry has grown louder and more frequent, following disclosures that American warships have carried nuclear weapons through local waters for years, with the knowledge of the Japanese government. Not true, says Prime Minister Suzuki, Japan will never allow the introduction of nuclear arms even in transit. And he trusts the U.S. To uphold that principle. No comments say American officials who will neither confirm nor deny the existence of nuclear weapons anywhere. Only vague denials amidst growing charges that the government has lied for two decades while acquiescing to U. S. Military aims. Indeed, many believe it would be nearly impossible for nuclear weapons not to pass through Japanese ports since most American warships are equipped to handle nuclear devices. And Japan voluntarily relies on the American nuclear umbrella for defense. So now, the anti-nuclear protests here, like those in Europe, are increasingly aimed at locally-based American forces, especially the Navy's Seventh Fleet, whose presence is now being equated with nuclear arms in general. And when the fleet's supercarrier, Midway, arrives at its Japanese home port in a matter of hours, after three months at sea, the traditional dockside unions. It ranks 13th among all banks in the state. Citizens is owned by about 560 stockholders. A bank holding company called PacWest wants to buy it. In October of 1979, PacWest wooed Citizens shareholders with an attractive $15 million offer, $45 a share. But last March, Pacwest substituted a much lower offer, 11 and a half million at less than $32 a share The newest offer provoked this letter to shareholders from Craig Robinson, a major stockholder himself and president of Citizens for 13 years until 1979. In it, he unloads on management for allowing PacWest to influence its decisions. Robert Franz, the head of PacWest, has been allowed to sit in on Citizens' private board meetings for a year and a half, ever since he made his first offer. One bank source suggests it would be naive to think Franz has had no influence on bank policy during that time. Citizen's Bank, as Robinson points out, has had a steady history of earnings for 13 years. From 1977 through 79, earnings were over a million dollars a year. Last year, for the first time, Citizen's bank posted red ink in its earnings column, a quarter million dollar loss. And all of this, as Robinsons says, occurred as Robert Franz sat in on board meetings. Citizen's management says it has used 1980 earnings to build reserves against bad loans. But that, too, is one of Robinson's criticisms. He says there's been an incredible increase in loans written off. He wants stockholders to refuse to sell their shares to PacWest, thus defeating its offer. And he wants stock holders to insist on the election of a new board of directors, one that wouldn't accept an offer like PacWest's latest. For his part, citizens board chairman Tom Williams says he thinks the staff and the management have done a fine job in the last 20 months.
