They've all had a real tough day, as I indicated. And they're wondering why this happened. It has been a tough day for the Forest Service employees, and it's going to take them a while to kind of settle into new places to work and to start to rebuild their research. Now we do have some new information on the investigation. The FBI is taking the lead on that investigation. The investigation is still under way. They're not saying much officially. They're even saying officially that they're investigating it as arson. They're looking for the cause is what they say. But some of the early fire, the first firefighters to the scene have said that when they got here, this parking lot was strewn with nails. Lots and lots of nails, and the other thing they noted was that there was fire in three distinct parts of the building when they arrived, and those are suspicious conditions that will make up part of this investigation.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71366/file/157318#t=598.64,660.6
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71366/file/157318/transcript/89799/annotation/45
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71366/file/157318#t=661.95,664.73
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71366/file/157318/transcript/89799/annotation/46
Speaker 13: Almost immediately, as a matter of fact, some of them today were in the offices at Rigden, starting to try to get some kind of work going again. The mayor and many other leaders, many other people around who have a big stake in what's happening today, will be on hand to lay down the last of the ceremonial bricks. Now, this is the second time in 25 years. The heart of eugene has received a massive surgery in february night februar thirteenth nineteen seventy one hundreds gathered at what was then the new mall fountain now back then the fountain actually worked in leaders and citizens had great hopes for the future of the city's new pedestrian center but as years passed the fountain broke and with it the hopes and dreams of retailers up and down the mall As workers today prepared for the reopening celebration. Scores of Onlookers studied the new artwork out here. It's quite interesting. And those who have been around for a few years are harkening back to the old glory days of a wide-opened Willamette Street. Now, getting back to what's happening out here now, we're still waiting for the big ribbon cutting. As with some celebrations that have a lot of people, things are a little bit delayed right now. If you've voted today, you know that. And that's one reason when you voted you received a booklet rather than the pamphlet that is usually in the voting booth. But it has meant that some people have had to wait a little bit to vote. Lots of people voting tonight. Also, right off the bat this morning we were at some polling places in South Eugene. A lot of people turning out right away there as well. Many took the time... About 40% of Lane County residents decided to do that. Now if you have not voted, the polls are open until 8 o'clock. The evacuations occurred much earlier in the day, and right now I've got some good news. It appears as though these devices that were found were in fact fake. Now most of the investigative crews have left the scene. In fact, here at Shorewood Packaging, investigators, we saw what we believe to be the Oregon State crime lab leaving the scene about 15 minutes ago. Now, 35 people were evacuated here at Shorewood packaging. This is the plant that does the printing and packaging for Tony's. Compact disks now Sony's across the street that device which was found. There was one device found there they were quite worried about that one because earlier today a Employee there found the device right next to a nitrogen tank. Let's go ahead and take a look at some video at 130 the the SWAT command team came in and They heard about this device now on the lower stanchion there right behind it What was what was placed there was what appeared to be a pop can? Now, there was 8,000, I believe this is true, 8, 000 pounds of nitrogen in that tank. It could have been disastrous were it a real bomb. Here at Sherwood Packaging, where only 35 employees were evacuated, there were two bombs. Those both appeared to be not the real thing. They weren't the focus of the initial investigation because they weren't placed near such a precarious position. Again, the bomb at Sony's nitrogen tank turned out to be fake. Now, the big thing about what happened here, we don't normally like to report on bomb threats because we don't like to give these people publicity, but the threat at Sony caused the evacuation of more than 400 people and really shook up and disrupted the lives of the workers there. We have with us now Jim Griffiths, he's a vice president here at Shorewood Packaging. And again we'll know the results of the election by tomorrow because by law all of the ballots must be counted by Friday. Jane, do we know what Measure 47 is going to cost schools if it passes? Well the state estimates that local governments and that includes schools will lose millions of dollars if the cut and cap measure becomes law. And supporters of the measure say if it becomes law it will make property taxes manageable for everyone in the state. Now what about that $1.2 billion figure that everybody's hearing about? Well, in terms of the cost, that's a figure that has been estimated by state officials, by people from both sides who looked at it and agreed that that would probably be what the cost is. An interesting element of that, though, of course, is what really happens the next step is that the legislature, if this passes, the legislature figures out... What's going to happen in terms of money to local governments including schools? First, younger people are less likely to follow the news, many are turned off by the electoral system, and younger people are mobile, which makes it harder to register to vote. But all this aside, a lot of 20-somethings we talked with did decide to vote this year. Despite a nationwide trend of low turnout at the polls by younger voters, a pollster from the U of O says Generation X is voting. Exit poll interviews he conducted in Lane County are promising they show that one-third of the voters that were interviewed were between the age of 18 and 29. And that is the single largest age group that they happen to talk to. So it could be good news or it could that younger people are more interested in talking about how they voted than older people. What we found out is if you follow some simple rules, you can take some great pictures on a disposable camera. These cameras are a great deal if you've forgotten your camera or you want a specialty lens, but at $10 to $15 a shot, the price adds up. So you might be better off buying an inexpensive compact camera in the $50 range. Gwen, are there any that you don't recommend? Well, there are. Consumer reports found that the 3M disposable cameras, they're labeled usually by store names, don't take very good pictures. They take poor pictures. And also, for people who have environmental concerns, this is a camera. REI markets their cameras, that they recycle the cameras. You know those leaves that are in front of your house on the sidewalk? They're your responsibility. They are not the city's responsibility. No one's going to clean them up but you. And it's important that you take care of them. Because if somebody falls and hurts themselves, you could be held liable. That's right. Property owners need to keep the leaves swept off their sidewalks. And later in the year, of course, the same principle applies to snow and ice. Now, there are a couple things you can do with these leaves, Rick. You can pile them up in a big stack and they'll deteriorate and become real nice compost. John Fisher tells me they make great soil. Also, you can spread them across your garden or you can call your local city government. You can push those leaves out into the street and the city government will pick them up for you. Trees are pretty in the summer, but they're pesky in the fall. It is now time to rake up the leaves from those deciduous trees. But while you might put off raking up the leads in your lawn, you'd better get to work right now on taking care of those sidewalks. Boy, I run like an old man these days, don't I? Well, anyway, now about getting rid of those leaves, there's a couple of things you can do. You can pile them up in a big stack out in your backyard. They'll turn into a big pile of earth eventually. You can also give them to your neighbors if they'll take them, ask them first, or you can call the city of Eugene. They do have a leaf pickup service. You got to call them in advance. There's the phone number on the screen. But here's a man who always has use for.
