In a new study, people who weighed the most had a significantly higher risk for the disease than people who weigh the least. But the highest risk was associated with those who consumed the fewest vegetables. A diet low in raw fruits was also a factor. Researchers say there was no esophagous cancer risk linked to the total calorie intake, number of meals eaten per day, level of fat intake, or consumption of tea or coffee. A sleep disorder may drastically shorten the life expectancy of some older people. A new study shows people over age 50 who have untreated sleep apnea have an eight-year survival rate of only fifty percent. For unaffected people, that survival rate is almost a hundred percent. Sleep apnea occurs when upper airway tissues collapse and temporarily close in the air passage during sleep. This causes literally hundreds of interruptions during sleep, and that can lead to daytime sleepiness and memory loss. Cutting down on fat and gaining weight, it may be a case of food boredom. For example, eating plain pasta can lower your fat intake, but it may so boring it won't satisfy your appetite. Chances are you'll eat more than if the pasta had a little flavor. And watch out for non-fat foods like yogurt. They're digested quickly, so you're hungry again faster. Lowering overall fat is good for your health, but boring food choices can lead to an increase in overall calorie intake. There are 11 major falls along this stretch of the historic Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway east of Portland, and this one, Horsetail Falls, comes practically to the edge of the road. The water funnels through a tight stone channel, focusing the power and the explosion of its spray. You can experience it first-hand if you take the stone steps down to the end of the pool. The fall generates its own wind, and down here relative humidity is, oh, probably A hundred and ten percent! Because so many falls lie along the historic highway, most travelers stick to their cars, making only the occasional quick trip across the asphalt to snap a few pictures. But the Columbia Gorge is laced with hiking trails, some easy, some a bit steeper. Here at Horsetail Falls, a trail leads up a series of moderate switchbacks to the top of the basalt cliffs. As you climb, you catch glimpses of the falls through the forest's bare winter branches. And just beyond the shadows, the Washington State side of the gorge is bathed in sunlight. You can work up a light sweat climbing the trail, but a half mile in, here's the payoff. Upper Horsetail Falls, also known as Ponytail Falls. And the trail not only leads you in for a closer look, it loops behind the falls itself. If you're heading for the Columbia Gorge, make sure to dress warmly, wear good walking shoes, and if you're planning to make a day of it, bring a lunch. You can get trail maps and hiking suggestions from the Forest Service at any of its Columbia Gorge offices, including the office located at popular Multnomah Falls. We'll head there next week on the Oregon Traveler.
