Saw that we were black Americans. She hit the ceiling, you can't stay here. Her husband said, well, this man is the man that called and you told him you had a room. I don't have, but I didn't know he was this way. My wife said, what are we, what way are we? But they wouldn't take us. A couple, white couple standing right in back of us got the room, you know, and we had to sleep out in the car outside. Well, why get mad at all the people because of what that lady did? I don't know what happened to her now. And this was said in the warden's office, and there was no inmate anywhere around. It's like talking about how the press was in danger of being captured or killed or something like that. And you will come up against the fact that most of them, or a great many of them though capable of college work, have not been pointing in that direction. Their counselors have been steering them in other directions, and they themselves don't really believe that they can do it. All of that background has suggested to them that they are not the type of person who goes to college. As Somerville will tell you, when you ask them in a classroom how many expect to go to college, almost everybody will raise their hand. As a piece of conforming behavior. But you talk to a particular promising student, a Negro, let's say, and he will say, OK, he will try. But tomorrow, he may very well have changed his mind. You simply have to stay with him in order to persuade him that he is the kind of person who can do well in college. And once you've got him admitted, you still have to work with him to persuade him to stay there. To arrange often for some special tutoring. Of course we're elated any time that racism is pushed back from any arena and since this program, this project that's going on now, the Olympic Project for Human deal specifically with the athletic arena we're overjoyed that South Africa has been banned because this is a pushing back of racism from the athletic arena but by the same token we cannot become so overjoy that the fire being put out in someone else's house that we forget that our own house is on fire also. Same as it has always been, a person does not change his mind about whether survival of a whole race of people are concerned. And I think it's something that's very important for whites to realize and also for some Negroes to realize. And this is a simple fact that if black people in this society decide that Negroes are not going to run in this year's Olympics, they're not going run. I don't give a damn what their own personal thing is. If black people decide they're going to not run, they are not gonna run. You see, it's a simple fact that these people have to live in a black community. I mean, whites are fixated so that they can't move into your community, they can move in next door to you. A person goes over there and runs against the will of black people, they cannot move out into the white neighborhood. Of course, white men are fixed this way, they gotta come back to the black neighborhood. And if he goes and runs, it might not be a bad idea for him to stay down there or keep going the other way and don't go too far east because he might run Africa and they wouldn't like it over there either. So I think that it's really irrelevant. You know, it's like the New York AC boycott. I think one forecast accounted up the number of people who were committed not to go, and it came to something like seven or something like that, and two undecided, and the rest of them were going out of 140 athletes who were invited to the New York Athletic Club meet. But when it came down to it, there were six who showed up as a result of threats to take away their scholarships and their jobs. University of Texas at El Paso, for instance. And the University of Texas was paying for that at this particular time. But, and a couple of other people who were in the armed forces. So because black people decided that blacks were not going to participate in the New York HC meeting. When the President of the United States has frequently and publicly stated that he would go anywhere, at any time, to work and to discuss and to talk... Then we began to play the cat and mouse game on where such negotiations might take place when there is indication that preliminary negotiations could take place. And we say that Warsaw, no. We say the capital, Cambodia, no! Let me say this, that during this time of this little political cat and mouth game, we have lost over 1,000 American lives. Over 1,000. And let me also remind you that it is not the location of the conference or the negotiations. It will be the quality of our negotiators and the clearness of our objectives and our goals for negotiation that will spell the success of negotiations if they are to succeed, and it's not going to be the physical location. And that is why I feel we should have taken up this so-called straw in the wind or this peace feel, or whatever you want to call it, immediately. Not that we would have not lost those 1,000 men, but I'm saying it might have brought us one day, one hour, one week, one month closer to an extrication of this quicksand activity in which we're engaged. With the governor of the state on the ballot as a favorite son that there was a significant number of votes for Richard Nixon as well as for Governor Rockefeller and I think it proves one point to me that I have sort of felt along the way and that is the so-called favorite son situation outside of California and Ohio I think is more fiction than fact. I don't believe that the favorite sons, in a sense, are going to be able to hold these delegations and be able keep them and guide them in any direction. I think they're all going to pretty much on the first ballot moving to their first preference. The major trend will be an expansion with regard to meeting, first of all, the demand for the number of students. An expansion in numbers, and then an expansion in programs. Programs which will develop not only areas of the law, which have often been neglected simply by virtue of the force of circumstances, but also reaching out and into areas in which the law comes in direct contact with society.
