Only four survived the tragedy that made national headlines and topped UPI's list of the major stories in Oregon this year. It's part of a politician's job to make news. Neil Goldschmidt did it with his come-from-behind victory over Norma Paulus. Goldschmidt will be sworn in as Oregon's new governor on January 12. Oregon Senator Bob Packwood became a familiar face on national news broadcast this year. He led the fight for federal tax reform and was re-elected to a fourth term in the Senate. And Representative Jim Weaver was seldom out of the media spotlight. He made the UPI list of top stories when he dropped out of the Senate race due to an ethics investigation. It's hard to think about 1986 in Oregon without thinking about the Rajinishis. Ma'anan Sheila and company made UPI's list when they ended up in prison and Rajinispuram was disbanded. Other big stories include Portland Police Chief Penny Harrington resigning under fire and Congress creating the new Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Oregon's timber industry is always in the news. Last summer, lightning sparked some of the worst fires in years in Eastern Oregon. And strikes shut down mills around the state. All were settled when workers agreed to wage and benefit concessions. Rounding out UPI's top stories were the record salmon runs that came after the disastrous years of El Nino and the Estacada school closure.
