The lake is now surfaced with ice about a foot and a half thick in some spots. And one of those places is here near dry falls, where fishermen cut holes through the ice to try their luck. In this sparsely populated region where rocks and sagebrush and irrigated farms run from horizon to horizon, fishermen bunch up for company as much as to catch fish. And in this region of vast distance, it's not uncommon for some folks to drive 50, 70, or more miles to get here, just for a few hours of fishing through the ice. Actually, there are probably a few more people than usual out today because the weather has turned mild. The weather's right. The fish are biting, but they're small. There's no problem keeping the fish fresh. The ice is a natural cooler. The ash that rained for hours took weeks, months to clean up, and today the casual observer sees no signs of it. But the uncounted tons of that dusting are still evident. On the outskirts of Yakimaw at Natchez, a vacant lot became an emergency depository for the ash. It's still there. Weeds are thriving in the stuff. On the north edge of town, open space for a proposed city park also became a dumping ground. The mounds were leveled and seeded with grass, and there is little to set the ash apart from the common ground, except memory. One of the most practical uses to which the ash was put was here in Union Gap, just south of Yakimaw, where Boots Basinger mixed it as a cement to build a fence around his house. Basinger couldn't be here today, but he told us to go ahead and take pictures anyway. Boots probably put more effort into this project than most of the other people who have mixed the ash to make various trinkets. And in its own way, the fence is at least as decorative as the Mount St. Helens baubles for sale in souvenir shops. The ash has been peddled in various ways. The old town grist mill packaged and sold it in one-pound bags. But mill owners, Sue and Larry Burmaster have set aside a cache of some 300 bags with the idea they'll become more valuable as collector's items in the future. It does seem unusual, though, ash gathering dust. And perhaps the biggest benefit of the ash that dusted Yakimaw on May 18th, 1980, was that instead of smothering the valley's apple industry, as was first feared, the orchards thrived.
