There were so many they had to wear name tags for the benefit of the court reporter. The lawyers filled the jury box and additional typing tables were needed to handle the overflow. They were there to represent Whoops, the ratepayers of Springfield, the other Oregon utilities who are suing Whoops, the cities and the public utility districts who are all involved on one side or the other. The exhibit file has already gone beyond quadruple T and on to Quintuple O, as the lawyers and the judge try to sort out the complaints, the cross complaints, and the amended consolidated cross complaints. Those appeals will be based on the factual record established here. Eugene Attorney Martha Walters, representing the ratepayers, opened the trial by telling the court there are two key issues remaining to be tried. One is whether the Oregon Constitution allows public bodies to become stockholders or investors in companies or corporations. Walter said they will show that public utilities actually financed the unneeded power projects for the benefit of Northwest Aluminum Companies. The reason the publics were needed, she claims, is that they could get lower interest rates on their bonds. The other key issue, said Walters, is whether the long-term contracts to pay Whoops whatever the plants cost violated the rights of future elected officials to make public policy. His goal was to convince officials he should remain in the U.S. Permanently. Rajneesh took a vow of silence before he came to Oregon. The Bogwan entered the U.S. On the same kind of visa that is granted any traveler, and now wants to change his status to that of religious worker and remain at his Central Oregon ranch permanently. We're getting so much local tree fruit right now. First, apples and pears, all kinds of apples, red delicious, golden delicious, macintosh, roam, Jonathan, amazing apples for eating, apples for baking, apples for jam, really great apple season. Also, local pear season. The Bartlett's are just about finished up, but we're into the winter pears. The Bartlett's, the Deanjus, the Comice, and the Boss, the Boss Pear. I hear a lot of that. Yes, boss. The boss pears, excellent pair for eating what I think the best winter pear. Also in the fruit scene, out of California. Still good values on melons of all kinds, seedless grapes, very, very good right now. New crop of citrus coming in out of California. Pomegranates coming in. The citrus prices will be a little higher, by the way. Locally, vegetables, kind of the peak of the season for them too. Broccoli, carrots, onions, cabbage, all four coming in locally. Very, very reasonably priced. Out of California, celery right now, 29 to 39 cents a pound, a very good value. Also, we're getting into a new crop of sweet potatoes and yams. Very good for these cool nights. A nice baked sweet potato yam. I'll tell you more about the differences between them a little later on. And finally, the new item of the week, cranberries from the Boggs abandon. The cranberries are on the market again. 12 ounce bags instead of a pound. You might remember that when you're doing recipes. Cranberries can be frozen. I suggest you buy them ahead of time for Thanksgiving and freeze them. You take them out, they do beautifully frozen. So cranberries are on the market this year. It's a great week for fruits and vegetables. And out of the serious stuff, I like the brewers, but I think the Cardinals will win the series in seven games.
