Studies on monkeys here and in North Carolina seem to point to a positive answer, at least for monkeys. But many experts questioned the way the monkey studies were done and pointed to the fact that there was no known evidence of increased heart disease in humans who had had a vasectomy. Fortunately, continuing studies seem to support the conclusion that human men do not increase their risk for heart disease if they have a vasectomy. In the most recent data reported, 1,598 men who had had a vasectomy for at least 10 years were compared with almost 5,000 non-sterilized men matched for age and race. The good news is that there was no difference between the two groups in terms of either symptoms or actual diseases suggestive of an increased risk for atherosclerosis, that is the buildup of fat in arteries. Now, some experts are cautious, suggesting that we need many more years of follow-up since heart disease can take a long time to develop. But all studies on humans to date consistently show no difference in terms of heart disease between men who have had vasectomies and those who have not, and that's obviously good news.
