The marsh has been dry for much of this century. In 1865, surveyor Byron Pengra wrote, the water is backed up from a series of beaver dams to overflow the entire meadow. He went on to say it could be easily drained by opening these dams and made for grazing. It was an accurate and prophetic description. The dams were broken and water was channeled along each side of the marsh. The grasslands dried out.
