Their eyes may light up at the side of the midway, or they may widen with fear. Teenagers usually lunge for the big stuff, but you don't want to put your three-year-old on the Cosmic Blaster or Tunnel of Doom. Instead, look for rides with names right out of nursery school. The Ladybug is about as action-packed as they come. And it's a thrill a minute on the merry-go-round. The way youngsters can drive their own dune buggies or souped up jalopies on a special track. Next thing you know they'll want to borrow the car keys. It's life in the slow lane but it's still lots of fun. Then there are the amusements best described as self-propelled. Little kids seem to get a kick out of this super slide while their folks get a healthy workout climbing the stairs to the top. And the fair has its share of fun houses. It's probably good for parents to give them a quick once over before sending a young child in unescorted. Some might be a little too scary, but others offer kids a grand old time. The Midway is filled with toys and trinkets. They can be yours for a price. There's even a chance to meet Smokey the Bear. Okay, how about some food then to settle them down? If things work out well, they'll sleep all night. The last rays of the setting sun strike a silhouette on the domes of the Pine Mountain Observatory. Located off of Highway 20, 26 miles southeast of Bend, Pine Mountain is the University of Oregon's premier astronomical research facility, and it remains open to the public even though it's fallen on tough times. Last year, Pine mountain's chief astronomer passed away, and the federal funding, which had been secured in his name, dried up. Until a replacement comes on board, Pine Mountain's university funding is modest. Just enough to cover basic maintenance and pay for a caretaker. But a citizens group, Friends of Pine Mountain, is committed to keeping the telescopes available to the public through a combination of donations and volunteer work. Two former research assistants, Doug Hankins and Lynn Carroll, operate the observatory on Friday and Saturday evenings.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71311/file/157263#t=23.98,185.3
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71311/file/157263/transcript/89826/annotation/2
Speaker 2: We've always been unique up here in the fact that we've allowed the public to come up.
