I spent all morning long in rather heated discussions and arguments. I was a little tired. I didn't have honestly, I'm not saying this to be a decision or anything, but I didn't have much concern about this competition. I had every confidence that I'd at least place third in me and make the team. In this competition, first is no better than third. So I wasn't concerned about that. I came to the field this afternoon feeling fairly flat. Fortunately, I had one good throw and the wind was blowing nicely and I threw another 211, too. So I qualified. Certainly that throw will not be a very effective throw in my judgment against the Europeans in the Olympic Games. I'll have to throw. At least that far under zero wind or even perhaps adverse wind conditions to expect to win in the game. You saw it, I just, I don't know nothing about it. What do you remember during the race, Tom? Getting scared. I just got scared. You knew where, did you know where you were at the end? I thought it was a tie for third, and I thought they were, had me and somebody else for third. That's what they said. I had no idea I wanted. How'd you feel going over the hurdles? Did you have any problems in the race at all? I felt well. I lost my composure halfway. I looked over. I don't know. I shouldn't have, but I did. And uh I think that might have had something, I don't know. It's slower than that. You think people were holding back? Holding in that? I don't know, man. No, you don't hold one if they're holding back so matter still saving right and they're gonna get a chance to use the next year sometime But I wasn't holding anything back. I was everything. I was every thing I had. Time was 13. Today. Did you think that would win? That would be about the rains that would win time. I don't know, like I said, I said Friday, if you take 15 flat to win it, you know. All I wanna do is win it. I don't care time, you could have the time, I don't care. Time don't mean nothing. How do you feel about beating Rodney? I feel good about winning it, that's all. There was seven other guys in there. I just feel good in winning it. That's all.\" I'll tell you what, it went very slowly, which I thought it might, but I wasn't sure, and I don't know. The only thing I could think of was to stay in contact. In fact, I don't remember even what the pace was. I don't recall paying any attention to the split times. All I wanted to do was wait for 3.30 to go and move up and watch the other fellows and kind of play it cool. With 2.20 to go, I thought I was trying to move because I thought there were an awful lot of people around. Your last split was just over 51. Did you think you'd have to run that fast in that last... Lap there. I thought we might but I mean that's really no surprise we did that from 68 at altitude so I thought I thought would have to run a lot faster than 341 I could see a much faster time really. Did they run your kind of race? Well I think they did although I feel that you know I don't mean this is an egotistical statement I feel I can run a fast pace or a slow pace and really I guess this is a easier way to run slow race and run fast at the end. You're good to see that smile on your face again. Before the race, you looked a little drawn, frankly. The crowd out. Oh, certainly. They've been marvelous. They have been behind me, and I felt their presence the whole time. I didn't notice them during the race because I was concentrating on what I was doing, but I don't know. There were a couple things I wanted to do when I finished. One was to see my wife immediately, and I wanted see my coach, but I couldn't find him. And the other thing I wanted was, and I don't like to do this sort of thing, run in front of the crowd and wave, but today I really wanted to show my appreciation. They've just been marvelous though. The whole Olympic trials, not only for me, but very contestant there. How do you feel in this race compared to the total race of 67 where you ran 50.7? How's your fitness and how do you just feel about it? It's kind of hard to decide about fitness. I don't know, I was actually pretty tired going into today's race. I can't explain why, I suppose, maybe. Well, I can. I think the emotion in the last 10 days has been a little trying, so that's probably the reason I felt a little tired. But compared to the race I ran against Tumor, it was really very difficult because this is the trials in 1967 against Tumer. It was just simply another race that I felt was important. I don't know, I wasn't concentrating on time today, I felt the important thing was to go to Munich and if I wanted to, fine, because I knew Waddle was running very well and when a guy's up, he's up and it's hard to get by him sometimes. I was really pleased today to run as well as I did. In fact, if we ran just under 51 or close to 51, I was surprised because the last 20 or 30 yards, I think I could have not, I don't know what happened and I was anxious to see that tape. Here, I don't remember seeing you do it at the very end of a race. Well, I was very, very excited. I suppose I was a little emotional today. I was just very happy to have it out of the way. You know, there's one thing about it, there are a lot of skeptics that have been, you know, not really thinking that I could do it, and understandably so, because my year hasn't been one that's been very consistent. But, you now, it hasn't really been the Olympic trials all year either. This is the one that was important, and it's the one I wanted to run well on. I was really happy to. I want to say one thing, and I was able to say it a while ago. You know there have been a couple of things that have really been key things this year, and I think. Faith in several different areas has been important. I put my trust in God and I felt that if I had the ability and he wanted me to, I would. I had a marvelous wife that stood behind me the whole time. There were times I was very trying, such as the March 4th meet. Nothing went well. I couldn't explain what happened, really. I think you'd ask the question, Jerry, what was going wrong? And I couldn't tell you. I still don't exactly know, but maybe the pressure and the circumstances weren't right. I didn't have enough motivation at the time, or maybe I wasn't enough competitive, but. Nevertheless, my wife stayed behind me and my coach did, you know, and we worked together the whole time, and there were some times I got to be very trying, but at the same time, you know, she was right there the whole way. Bob, how much higher? Who knows? Music's going to be a whole new story, I think. With the competition there, Shell, Isaacson, and some of the other European ballers, I think we'll equal this height here today, probably higher. If the conditions are anything like they are here today I'm sure we'll jump higher. Did the competition surprise you all here today both with respect to individuals involved in the final flight and? And you're at. Well, when four men bomb over the 17.8 and a half on their first jump, you've got to worry, that's for sure. Were you worried? Well, obviously, it only takes three men, and we've got four men jumping like there's no tomorrow. It's very upsetting and it's very nerve-racking. You talked about the runway here. Is this about the path that you've been on? How would you compare it to others? It's definitely one of the best facilities I've ever been on, obviously. I think El Paso was very good. Mount San Antonio Junior College is an ideal setup. And what makes this one good? Well, just the runaway is very fast. We have a good tailwind and the nice, wet weather here today. That's the main thing. You got a nice warm day, plus you have a tailwind. This is the biggest factor you need. How did you feel on that jump? Did you feel you hit it? You knew it when you had it? Or did you fell late or what? I was A little tired on my approach after the day's competition. I was getting very tired. My approach was not as strong as I liked, but I had a good early pull plant, which saved it, I think. And I felt myself losing my momentum going up, and I gave a little extra effort in there somewhere, and it got me over. I was pretty sure that I was going to be able to have a pretty good kick. The last lap was tough and Steve Savage made it tougher. I was gonna ask you about that. Steve was ahead of you until that last water jump down there. What happened down there? Well, I picked up and he slowed down. Or one or the other, two or the both, I don't know. He was tired but he knew he had to get out there with his strength because he's a very strong runner. Doesn't quite have as good a kick as... The quickness that he liked to have, I'm sure, but he's very strong and that's what he had to do. The conditions of the track they had to water it down, Mike, was it cool enough to run on there by the time they watered it down or was it still hot? Track is great. What can I say, you know? Yeah, it was probably necessary, probably more necessary for this one, the 10,000 coming up, but I usually don't feel the track too much. It's, of course, a great track and it's very fast. Did you have any problems at all today? Yeah, I was tired at the end. No, and I was really happy with that. I was worried about it for about three to four weeks. I had a lot of problems, and was very depressed. But I went down to the coast for a week and up in the mountains for a weekend, talked to a couple of priests up there, and everything came out all right. Thank you. Collins, Fitzgerald, King, MacMillan, Linzenmaier, Frederick, and Hurst. Jane Frederick in lane 7, out very fast, and Gail... See us in God. Standing back here the first couple of days. Thank you. Quickly. Oh Brenda Moorhead in the blue and lane three. Debra Armstrong on the outside. Thank you for being here. After you've made it to Parkway. 14-23-6, Marty McCoy. To twenty-one, three. To America's five thousand meter champion, that's a thirteen thirty-six six. Let's go Diabra, let's go, Diabro! Thank you. But hardly one has gone. And outside of it... That's what I want.
