Regardless of how they got here, though, agriculture officials are more concerned than ever about these ravenous bugs. It's not just the fruit and shade trees they're worried about, but timber species as well. Tests done at Oregon State University show that the moth caterpillars, known for their appetite for broadleaf foliage, eagerly devour the needles on Douglas fir trees, too. This latest infestation is prompting officials to go ahead with their plans for eradication in this area. That's when the moths would be in their caterpillar stage. Valtterza says local citizens will have plenty of chance for input before any spraying is done.
