That's good news. Leaf items starting to come in locally now. Not going to be paying $1.19 for lettuce. You're going to paying about $0.69 to $0,79. It's a lot better. Good things are even more to come. Best buys this week. Asparagus out of Washington, $0 .79 a pound. Carrots, $4 pounds, $5 pounds for a dollar. Zucchini was about $1 a pound last week. It's about half that price this week, so some good values. High price items. Red potatoes is high at $0.,70 a pound, and the tomato market again. About a dollar a pound. Over in the fruit department, best values this week, naval oranges, four, five, six, seven, eight. God knows how many pounds for a dollar, depending on size and quality, but there's a lot of naval oranges around. Also out of Mexico, very good melons, cantaloupe, watermelon, still very, very sweet. Newtown apples coming in now, also Granny Smith apples, they're 80 cents a pound, you might stick with the Newtowns. Finally, high-priced fruit this week. You're gonna find bananas, not very appealing, they're running 60 cents a pounds, they're in short supply. Of course, they are good, but they are expensive. So, all in all though. A pretty good week. The child was attacked by a man who falsely identified himself as a summer instructor at the summer sports clinic. The 8- year-old who survived a shooting last month on Old Mohawk Road was released from a local hospital this week and is in protective custody in a foster home. Christy Downs was one of two children who survived a late-night shooting that killed her sister and injured her mother in the arm Her brother is still in Sacred Heart Hospital with possible paralysis below the waist. In a pair of murder trials this week, Robert Wayne Parks has been found guilty of shooting his 24-year-old roommate in December. He'll be sentenced in the next week or so. Meantime trial continues for 35-year old Kevin McCormick. He's charged with shooting a complete stranger last month outside a local tavern. The defense says the accused suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome, a result of the Vietnam War, and is not criminally responsible for the murder. The prosecution believes otherwise. Trial continues this week. Lane County's transient population returned to public eye this week, first with a fire in one of three houses off River Road that vagrants are known to occupy. The structures were abandoned years ago, have severe structural damage from previous blazes. Wednesday, Lane County puts some muscle into an ordinance that will shut down dangerous and unhealthy buildings and gives officials a way to take care of the River Road problem or before they had no legal jurisdiction. And Eugene's City Council the same day accepted a task force report on the local transient population, its numbers and some ways to care for those who need help and discourage those who don't. Some fireworks in Salem this week where the legislature voted to return the state Accident Insurance Fund to its original form as a public agency. A Lane County Circuit judge may order SAFE dissolved as a quasi-public agency because he says such an organization is unconstitutional. The idea of a state sales tax is still getting kicked around in the Oregon Senate. Majority Leader Ed Bailey took charge of a special Senate committee on the sales tax at mid-week. That panel has discussed revisions which would make it more of a personal income tax. Oregon's gas tax may be going up if some officials have their way. They say that extra money is necessary to match federal funds resulting from nationwide gas tax increase. Meantime, there's talk among some Oregon counties to push through increased gas taxes of their own for folks who fill it up. Tuesday's election day around the state. Locally, the push was hard last week by county politicos to get their money measures passed. Law enforcement dominates the county ballot, along with assessment and taxation and vector control. Over at Eugene City Hall, the budget crunch is bringing planned municipal layoffs to hand, including a sharp cut in the local library staff. The library will have to rely on even more volunteer help and donations after July 1. And it will take 67,000 signatures for opponents to put the fate of Rajneesh Puram on the Oregon ballot. A group wanting to rid the state of the Guantri Rajnees and his followers were told they could go ahead with their petition drive to dissolve Rajneish Puram. There's still some uncertainty as to whether such a move is constitutional, but it can't be ruled on until the issue actually goes up for a vote. If there is a vote, it will be in November of 1984. Even supporters of the package conceded the proposal would not provide tax reform. Rather, it would merely continue the practice of using state-collected income taxes to subsidize local property taxes. With the measures defeat, the question of property tax release remains in doubt.
