Because he was a world leader, his funeral was attended by leaders and representatives of many countries. But it is a measure of the times that only a few Arab nations were in attendance. The man who, though he made war, also had the courage to make peace. Was left almost alone by his Arab brothers outside Egypt. The funeral began this morning in a mosque at the Mahdi Military Hospital in South Cairo, where his male relatives gathered for a three-minute prayer service. Then the body was taken by helicopter to Nasser City and the grounds of a sports club. It was then transferred to an army jeep, which drove slowly to an assembly point. The casket was placed on a horse-drawn carriage for the quarter-mile procession to the reviewing stand. The same place where Anwar Sadat was murdered on Tuesday. There, his widow, Jihan, joined the procession for the short walk to the tomb of the unknown soldier and the grave that had been prepared for her husband. At the Mahdi hospital, where a special morning prayer service was held for the slain president, police and soldiers kept uninvited press and public away. Although the coffin was flown from the hospital to the burial site by helicopter, most of the route was kept under extraordinarily tight security. Only those with special passes could penetrate the cordon of guard. All others were turned away more than a mile from the tomb of the unknown soldier, where President Sadat's body will lie until a special mosque is built for him there. Greatest concern was for the hundreds of foreign dignitaries who came for the funeral. Most were housed in hotels outside the city and provided their own additional security, like the Americans who were guarded by secret service men armed with submachine guns. Most of Cairo remained calm as the official funeral ceremony went off without incident. But in places emotions got out of control. With many who took to the streets in impromptu demonstrations crying and chanting their grief over the loss of their leader. Ironically, the precautions taken to safeguard the funeral guests today might have saved the dead president, but authorities are determined that there will be no repeat of Tuesday's lapse of security.
