And I was encouraged that his feeling was that the measures which the administration has been seeking to put into effect in the way of the continuation of the surtax, in federal governmental spending. And in what's been done with interest rates and tight money, he feels is really taking hold. And I was encouraged that this was not talk for public consumption, but this was talk to one individual member of the Congress. The greatest concern that Secretary Kennedy expresses at the moment is the psychology of it. He said something like this to me. He said, Congressman, we're satisfied that if the psychological aspects of inflation can be kept under control, that actually we can begin to ease off. Controls of a fiscal and monetary nature that we have been imposing within the next couple of months. But he said our risk is that if we start to ease back on these controls that the public will take this as a signal that the battle's been won and all of a sudden psychologically we will lose the battle. But I was very encouraged you see that they feel on the administration top level that the effect is really there, that they are finding that the economy is cooling. My feeling on French peat is essentially that it should not be the function of the Congress to attempt to legislate valley by valley or small area by small area on a matter as critically as important as the French peats type issue is important. I have from the beginning stood with the Forest Service saying that it is its responsibility under congressional directives to look at the total picture. Getting these things worked out. One of the main problems that we have experienced in the past is open primary battles, which of course I'm in favor of, but the fact that after the primary battles were over, the hostilities between the camps or among the camps, if there was more than two candidates, there were more than two candidates has continued, and this has been very detrimental. The most immediate thing that's happened to the party, of course, is the debt which was incurred between August of 1968 and October of 1969. We have plans for working our way out of this debt. One of the first big occasions was the Support Caroline Dinner, which the Jane Jefferson Club put on in Salem on December the 7th. This helped raise some finances, and we do have the convention coming up in early March. It's in direct violation of rule 39 on page 14 of the manual. The chief has interfered with the judicial system of the city of Springfield. I've talked, and he says, and I quote from the same newspaper article, I've talk to the new municipal judge, and he promises stiff sentences for guilty drivers. What business has a police chief got talking to a judge about what kind of fines or punishment that he's gonna direct towards a prisoner? Now, my estimation of the police chief of this city is just passing through. And this, I think, is evidence regarding the answer that he gave to a question of what he was going to do after Springfield. And this is a quotation of what said. It would either be a police job at the state level, like working with the governor to improve police standards, and I hope he wouldn't improve them in the state like he did here, or it would be a job in professional baseball.
