Well, here it is, the end of August, summer's winding down. But the local fruit and vegetable season is just really kicking into gear. Let's take a look. First off, we're getting a great supply of local green peppers, golden peppers, these hot little jalapenos. Pepper market's been high, particularly out of California. These are a much better price. What else is coming in local from the vegetable market? Walla Walla sweet onions, just about finished up. White onions coming in now. Getting some wonderful carrots, cucumbers. Also the best news, local tomato crops coming on now. It's warm weather. Tomatoes are ripening up very nicely. Good prices as low as $0.30, $040 a pound for nice large, firm ripe tomatoes. Let's swing over and take a look at the fruit department locally. Thank you. We're getting gravenstein apples coming in now, plums of all kinds coming in now, pears, some beautiful Bartlett pears coming in. Notice how green they are when they're picked a day or two in this warm, warm temperature. They get a nice, nice ripening up buttery flavor color here. Also coming in, nectarines out of Washington, a little higher price, a short crop. Peaches now, peaches are a hail. These are a freestone peach, not as good of an eating peach, but an excellent canning peaches. These hail peaches, very good buy. Look into California, the citrus market out of California is particularly high right now. Part of it's due to the med fly scare. Part of is due to a short supply of Valencia oranges. We had a lot of navels. Valencias are twice as much money. I think the main reason, though, is this med fly scare, and in conjunction with the med fry scare, It was recently discovered that those Florida medflies were actually from New York. They had retired and moved down to Florida. Cause of death, inflation. But memories may soon be all that's left. Unless more money is found, the era of reaching out to the planets, of sending our spacecraft and landers to other worlds, will all be over. It will be five years before we see pictures from deep space again. The same Voyager spacecraft that's now sending back photos of Saturn will continue on to the planet Uranus and get there in 1986. After that, three more years and Voyager will reach Neptune in 1989. There is only one new mission left on the drawing boards. It's called Galileo, running behind schedule already and working on a tight and possibly inadequate budget. The goal is Jupiter, an orbiter to circle that enormous planet and a probe to plunge into its atmosphere. Arrival there, not before 1987 or 88 at the earliest. In fact, it looks like the U.S. Is even going to miss what promises to be one of the most spectacular space expeditions ever, chasing and catching the most famous of all the comets, Halley's Comet. It will pass near the sun again in 1986. The Soviet Union, France, Japan, and possibly other nations are all planning missions to but not the United States. NASA just can't get the money. The memo to the Sheriff says the county has consulted with its insurance carrier and found that the county is potentially liable for the use of those SWAT team rifles by employees of the district attorney. The memo recommends the sheriff write a letter to the district's attorney telling him the sheriff can't take any responsibility for the rifle purchase or assume any liability that might arise from their use. It also suggests the sheriff takes steps to limit the use of the firearms by people outside your office. What that means is the sheriff could order the district attorney's investigators to either limit or not use the SWAT team rifles at all.
