For thirty dollars a week, first through fifth graders play sports, do arts and crafts, and are generally kept busy by the staff at the Wye from eight in the morning until four o'clock. For an extra five dollars, working parents can leave their kids till five thirty. Seventy kids showed up the first day and more than a hundred are expected Thursday. First, by withdrawing seven thousand dollars of union funds from this bank where two Coos bay school board members work. Then, by parading through the heart of town to the offices of Coose Bay's newspaper, The World, which they charge has been biased against them during negotiations. The school board retaliated by announcing it had hired enough substitute teachers to staff all its classrooms. And the chairperson of the Coos Bay School Board, Rachel Henke, indicated those substitutes would be trained this coming Monday and Tuesday, then placed in schools on Wednesday.
