One of the first things you'll probably go looking for is a pair of boots. In this shop, they're anywhere from a little over $50 to a little under 300. Of course, no outfit here is complete without blue jeans. You can put out $50 for your designers. But $15 at the clothesline boutique will be enough for a more than adequate pair of wranglers. Remember, you're going to get dirty. And then to top it all off, of course, you are going to need your Stetson. They run anywhere from $30 to $100. This one is $65. So you can put Western look together for anywhere from $75 to $500. You might stroll through the museum to get used to your boots. Wickenburg's is remarkable. For a dollar donation, you can see a generous assortment of Indian rugs, baskets, as well as bronze sculptures specific to the area. Certainly specific to this area are the cactus. The desert is filled with tall saguaro, flat prickly pear, and the graceful yucca. The century plant is very common, but worth scrutiny. Any can be found in and around town, as well is out in the country. While you're browsing, hit the Wickenburg Gallery. The local art perfectly reflects the work and lifestyle of ranching, but to purchase the art may run you several hundred to several thousand dollars. The Eugene budget committee must get a handle on austerity as they face a reduced flow of revenue for the 30 million dollar city budget. The city's new airport fire station was one of several stops today for six of the committee members. 90% of the cost of this truck was paid for with federal funds, but most of the rest of the city's services won't be so lucky. The City's newly consolidated public works garage tries to maintain over 900 vehicles. Many are old and inefficient. But there won't be much money to buy newer models. People aren't paying their property taxes. Fines and forfeitures are down. State and federal monies are waning. Employees may or may not want to forego pay raises. So there may be fewer people to fight fires, combat crime, sweep streets, and develop downtown. The committee gets Gleason's recommendations tomorrow night. Today, he wanted them to see where the money would go.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70385/file/156329#t=1528.16,1580.5
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70385/file/156329/transcript/86424/annotation/67
Speaker 12: You can sit there and kind of try to mentally picture what the gravel truck looks like or the street system or the fire or the airport. The KL Bar is also seasonal, open during winter and spring months. A small room will run just over $50 a night. Per person, there are no room keys. That price includes all three meals, and these are home-cooked. No bakery items are store-bought. It's all fresh, home-baked breads, pies, even English muffins. And if you're lucky, some popovers might just pop out of the kitchen at breakfast time. Lunch is a cookout if the weather is nice, and it's just as you might imagine. Picnic tables, checkered tablecloths, hamburgers, and macaroni salad. The whole concept on the ranch is family, and that includes guests. You all eat together, share stories, and get to know one another. It's perfect for children. Dinner around the big barbecue pit and grill is a treat. Beef is big here, both in popularity and size. Steak and potatoes are the main staples. Dinner is also served in the dining room. You can easily overeat here if you're feeling overstuffed. Last Tuesday morning, Larry woke up in his bedroom here just before 7 o'clock. He heard a loud noise, and when he looked out his window right out there between those two trees, he saw a helicopter coming right toward him, and behind it was spraying a heavy white substance. Kafer says he detected a sweet odor and could feel a strange flavor on his taste buds. He got a sore throat and a headache, and that headache has lasted all week, requiring him to take 12 to 15 aspirin a day. Kafer admits that his symptoms might be psychosomatic, but some of his neighbors got worried and asked him to check it out. Well, a week after the spraying, officials from Lane County and the State Department of Forestry came to take soil and water samples, but the state officials decided to leave abruptly when we arrive. Bohemia representatives told us that the two chemicals sprayed that morning are no more toxic than common table salt. The chemicals are used to kill grass that provide cover for rodents who nibble at the bark of growing trees. Bohemia says the spraying is harmless and that the tests being conducted should prove whether any of the spray hit Mr. Kafer's land. Helicopters will spray 10 square miles of urban salem with the chemical 7, a substance which is toxic to gypsy moth caterpillars. Entomologists estimate that the goods infested with the pest will see the spring hatch sometime early next month when the weather warms up. Without the spray, experts predict the caterpillers will devour most everything green in the tree-shaded residential areas. Now, Oregon plans to copy procedures used in New Jersey and other eastern states using helicopters for the aerial assault. When the caterpillars hatch in the east, they crawl over houses, automobiles, everything, seeking to munch on trees and bushes. Now, this pest is particularly deadly. It eats 300 different species of plants and trees. The Salem infestation is its first foothold in Oregon. The state agriculture department says it wants to stop the caterpillar's here in Salem before they munch their way to your backyards and other parts of the state. Even so, some residents here in Salem are upset about it, and they filed court challenges to block it. With me now is State Agriculture Director Leonard Koonsman, who made the decision to go ahead and spray the Chemical 7 here in Salem.
