A gentle rain falls on the oak and maple trees here in Eugene, Oregon. The senator doesn't spend much time here, but when he does, he's fond of tending his prized cattle. Descendants of the breed brought to the new world on the Mayflower. Morris does not seem worried about how Oregon voters will react to his attacks on the administration's Vietnam policy. Even though he is a long way from home, he keeps an eye on Oregon opinion as reflected in the newspapers. Virtually all the state's papers are opposed to Morris. About the only one of any side supporting him is the Coos Bay World. The Portland Oregonian is the state's largest, most influential daily. It accuses Morris of staggering inconsistencies of trying to destroy the American will. The Oregonian said Senator Morris predicted it isn't going to be too long before the American people, as a people, will repudiate this war. Just how the people can repudiate the war, said The Oregonian. Without overthrowing the government was not explained by Senator Morse. And the Oregonian calls them wildly improbable. We talked to some Oregon editors, among them The Oregonian, Malcolm Bauer. My feeling is that most of the people of Oregon do not agree with Senator Morse on Vietnam. Do you feel that will hurt him politically here at home? Well, of course, if they don't agree with him, it will hurt him politically. But then Wayne Morse has been over a lot of months and many years. And apparently he always when he comes to the election years, it's a different matter.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141359/file/261346#t=10.44,102.51
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141359/file/261346/transcript/76185/annotation/2
Speaker 2: Of the reaction of the people in our areas toward senator voters. And I think basically the constituency in Oregon, if I may use that phrase, they kind of like this really. They like him being a loner. They don't think it will hurt him. I don't think it will. I think that they respect him because his position is fundamentally a moral one. He is also a legalistic in the sense that he wishes to adhere to strict constitutional form. And I think the respect for morality and respect for law and respect for the Constitution is very strong, as well as the respect for the individual and his willingness to be independent like President Johnson. Senator Morse does not have to stand for election until 1968, so for the present, he is safe politically, no matter what the reaction at home. And on the surface at least, there is little evidence his constituents are either embarrassed or unhappy because of his vigorous opposition to this country's foreign policy.
