When our nation was born, there were 25,000 bald eagles in what would become the lower 48 states. As our nation grew, our agriculture grew. The eagles ate fish from water contaminated by chemical pesticides. The poisons accumulated, reduced the thickness of their eggshells, and wiped out whole populations. By the early 70s, there were probably no more than 3,000 bald eagles left. But DDT was outlawed in 1972, and the effects have begun to show. Now there are about 5,000 bald eagles, and that number increases to almost 14,000 in winter as migrants soar down from Canada. A day like this might seem a little late in the season for bird migration, but as many as 150 bald eels an hour have been seen moving across this Wisconsin the countryside. When the conditions are right. But when we arrived, it was snowing. There was no wind. And eagles are creatures of the wind. The birds were there almost everywhere we looked, but they were down for the day. The eagles were believed to have at least three major flyways, the Atlantic, the Mississippi, and the Pacific. No one is sure how the birds spread out, but they show up in all of the lower 48 states. They seek open water between the ice, like here in the Mississippi where they can fish. Produce is going to be real good this week. No surprises, a lot of good values. Over in the vegetable department, best buys this week, well, lettuce was very high last week. It's come down in price. All the lettuce and spinach greens are going to a good value. They're going to to be a little muddy. I don't have to tell you, it's been raining. But the prices are very reasonable, 40 to 60 cents a head. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, Brussels sprouts, all fairly moderately priced this week other good values. Onions of all kinds, potatoes of all kind, sweet potatoes, yams, rutabagas, turnips, parsnips, all very, very reasonably priced this week. Tomatoes out of Florida, the smaller tomatoes, good value, about 30 to 40 cents a pound. Larger tomatoes are going to be about twice as much, quality is so-so, but they do have some color this week, over in the fruit department, citrus highlights it this week. Oranges, tangerines, tangelos, grapefruits. I mean, we don't have the orange bowl and the tangerine bowl this time of year for nothing. Citrus is good right now, very reasonably priced. Other items reasonably priced, pomegranates and persimmons, kiwifruit out of California, a little more exotic, but again, a good value. A couple of things that are going to be a little more expensive. Pineapples and cantaloupes, very good quality but kind of the end of the season for cantaloupe and not really the peak of the seasons for pineapple so they're going to set you back. Finally, Haas avocados are available right now, they're about twice as much money as the other varieties of avocado but they are simply the best avocado, it's a thicker skinned avocado, its green, it turns black when it gets ripe and it's excellent.
