But I'm afraid you'd be disappointed. The place now is far more commercial than quaint. The same goes for Chinatown. At best, neither is worth more than about a half hour of your time. A much better investment of your time would be a harbor tour. Breathtaking views, $6 for just over an hour. The Alcatraz tour gets rave reviews from me. But make reservations two weeks in advance or risk standing in line only to be turned away. If you're in the mood for something commercial, try Ghirardelli Square. You'll find scores of shops and restaurants along with authentic sourdough bread. And of course, there's the famed Ghiradelli chocolate. Do yourself a favor. See Golden Gate Park. Rent roller skates or bicycles for a little exercise. Stroll through the Japanese gardens, De Young Museum, or the Steinhardt Aquarium. Not far away is Golden Gate Bridge. Walk across for a superb overview of San Francisco and its bay. As if the city of San Fransisco itself is not enough, the side trips will take you to another world. To the east, Berkeley. To the north, Sausalito, and the Napa wine country. And to the south, Redwood City and Marine World Africa USA. Wherever you choose to go, don't forget to just stop and dream. Absorb where you are. It's the key to memorable traveling. With San Francisco, you don't have to work at that. The fog and fish and blend of humanity here will fill your senses. The windows are made up to look like sheets of chrome. The two plan to apply black spray foam, pebbles, sand, and fake rocks to make the interior resemble a cave. With the onslaught of spring and spring break, combined with the depressed economy, people had sunnier climbs on their minds and showed up in throngs. The first hour of registration called 2,500 entries. By drawing time at 10 a.m., an estimated 5,000 people had showed up at the Springfield Red Lion, parking their cars bumper to bumper in nearby lots and on the shoulder of Interstate 5. With two sound systems in service, the self-proclaimed world's greatest airline giveaway got underway. You'd tell when a winner was nearing the crowd, his friends broke into wild applause and then the lucky contestant had to fight his way through the mob to the front podium. As the number of tickets dwindled, the hopefuls set up desperate prayers for their names to come up. Draw 148 produced the largest roar of the morning. KZI camerawoman Danny Wilkie was in the middle of a shot when they selected her name. Talk about pandemonium. The already standing well-wishers gave her an ovation, she surrendered to Canada to receive a round-trip ticket, and the rest is history. On draw 149, Republic officials announced that since the airline served 176 cities, it would give away 26 more passes to match that number. But finally the contest was over. Only thing left was for the winners and also Rams to struggle out of the Red Lion parking lot. And make their way home. For an outdoor treat, grab a crab cocktail, a loaf of sourdough bread, and maybe some wine. It's a good meal, and it's cheap. When you're hungry for just a snack, keep your eye open for a street-side pretzel vendor. Chinese restaurants also abound. The Asia Gardens is a good value, but you should also know that some of the best meals are tucked away behind the storefront rooms. Don't be afraid to ask for a special arrangement in the back. Some of the town's most famous eateries need to be approached with some caution. Tadiches, for example, has only so-so food these days, in service that is really often rude.
