We have found that the Eugene franchise pays one of the six or seven highest dollar amounts to keep a triple-a ball club in in the city. Now there are 24 triple-A baseball clubs in the country and there are twenty four major league clubs. Every major league club is required to have a triple a working agreement. We did a study and found that some teams are paying as low as $200 per month per player for 20 players, whereas Eugene is paying $450 per month for a player. We feel it's in the best interest of Eugene, therefore, to seek a different working agreement for the next season. The Philadelphia Phillies and the Emeralds had a three-year working agreement, which was signed a year ago at the World Series. We'll be starting the second year of that this next season And they also wanted fellows in their best interest to move their team, their AAA team, closer to their home base in Philadelphia and that's why they're going to go to Toledo. So the agreement was mutual. We did have a binding three-year written contract. All parties agreed it'd be in the best interest of everyone concerned if that was terminated, so that is why we've done it. Also, there's no secret that the Emerald front office was not happy with the way players were taken up this year off our AAA team and not replaced or if they were replaced maybe two weeks later.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69289/file/155698#t=760.689,851.53
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69289/file/155698/transcript/79690/annotation/15
Speaker 9: The settlement provides the following. The specific charges are threefold. One, Overton's alleged use of a sap to beat the prisoner, Omar Balmrod, last August 25th. Two, Overston was in charge of a night patrolman division and had all of his men off the road one night when a burglary was reported. Third, according to Burks, Overson's behavior was unpredictable and he suffered blackouts and memory lapses. Overton's defense attorney, Kenneth Morrow, quickly challenged Burke's arguments. Morrow's first witness was Dr. Leslie White, who examined the prisoner less than three days after the incident. Dr. White said there was no sign of any bruises on Baumrod's body. He said the use of a sap on a victim would usually cause external marks. Regarding Burke's second charge, Overton acknowledged that he should have had someone in the field. At all times, but he says the entire crew only consisted of three men and he contends there was no burglary reported that night during the time his men were off-duty. Other witnesses contested Burke's assertion that Overton did not work well under pressure. Overton's former immediate supervisor, Sergeant David Gilbertson, called Overton an above-average police officer. Also, two prosecuting attorneys who worked with Overton in several cases said Overton was a fair and reliable witness. The testimony is now all in and the Lane County Personnel Review Board will evaluate all the evidence and within 10 days they'll decide if Sheriff Brooks was justified in his decision to fire John Overton. Finally, I say to you the press, my supporters, the voters, and all citizens of Oregon that But in the campaign ahead, I intend to be just as blunt and straightforward. I have been here today. I intend this to be a no-nonsense campaign with straight answers and honest discussion. When I am elected I intend to conduct a straight no-sense administration and so I'm ready to go. I'm ready to campaign and I look forward to talking and working with my fellow citizens of Oregon. And I ask my fellow citizens to join me now in this venture.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69289/file/155698#t=1243.48,1360.92
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69289/file/155698/transcript/79690/annotation/27
Speaker 13: No way. You see, there's a thing called the Einstein space-time mechanics, which says that as mass approaches infinity, time approaches zero, which means that if you were to get in a spaceship and go to the nearest star, which is Alpha Centauri, Even if you travel at the speed of light, it would take you like 40 years, OK? So you can't achieve light speed. So that means that whatever race would come from another star would have had to develop a source of energy, a means of propulsion, far beyond anything we know, just way beyond it. Not because i can point a finger at others, but because i am able, when the occasion arises, to laugh at myself. And because I had rather see an honest mistake, honestly made, than see no action taken because of fear of consequences. Most recently, I listened to my opponent's public statements concerning the present crisis in Washington, concerning the credibility of the president, concerning his opinions on whether or not impeachment proceedings should be begun, and concerning whether or the nomination of Gerald Ford should be acted upon and confirmed or denied. And I have felt that in his public statements, there is a lack of. Substantive opinion for the voters of the fourth congressional district to base their opinions on. The reason being that, well, I feel that there might be some loss of effectiveness as a state treasurer if I suddenly become Redden for governor rather than Jim Redden, state treaesurer. And there are an awful lot of programs we're trying to put together. For instance, the local government investment pool program, which we're putting together right now, that goes into effect January 1, and it requires working with the county. Officials across the entire state. I think it's more important that I put that program together successfully than I declare or make formal my candidacy. Many of my friends tell me that it really, they don't think it would make any difference in the effectiveness. If they're correct, then I might as well be announced, but I really, that's my concern. We recently, for instance, got a AAA rating now, which is very important to taxpayers here in Oregon. If I had been running around the state campaigning. Instead of uh... Working on that triple a rating why we wouldn't have gotten a triple a ratings so i think it's uh... Is a conflict uh... Sort of conflict there that i have to resolve but uh...
