Now there are only a few sections still standing. They're a magnet for artists, political protesters, tourists, and the kids who sell souvenirs for a handful of pocket change. But while the wall is slowly being demolished, it seems like the rest of Berlin is under construction. Locals call it the City of Cranes. They obscure the view of the Brandenburg Gate, and they surround the Reichstag, Hitler's former chancellery that's being gutted in anticipation of the government's move from Bonn to Berlin. The building is little more than a shell, but when renovations are completed it will be the new home of the German parliament. The buildings along the Unterden Linden, once East Berlin's main drag, sparkle from recent facelifts. Even the Russian embassy is getting a new coat of paint. Workers are renovating elevated rail lines, even moving a river to accommodate the new construction. History moves pretty fast in Berlin, but residents say they won't forget the past. There are plenty of reminders of World War II, including the shattered hulk of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Then there's what's left of Checkpoint Charlie, the most poignant symbol of a once-divided city. These days, Checkpoint Charley is an odd mix of old and new, of East and West, of German and American. Crowds still throng to the Checkpoint charlie museum, where former Eastern Bloc residents get in for half price. But the biggest tourism draw is, what else? A construction site, Potsdamer plots, Europe's largest collection of cranes and heavy machinery. You can check out the displays in the bright red info box, learn about all the buildings taking shape on this former no man's land, and about the changing face of a united Berlin.
