No matter how long you've been fishing for a particular kind of fish, if you go with one of your friends, he'll teach you something new. I learned something this last weekend out on the Umqua that was exciting for me and it produced a lot of fish. I've fished with these little rubber garland jigs for years for crappies, but I'd never thought about using them for shad. The traditional shad dart is a fly tied with feathers and that kind of stuff. This little rubber jig proved to be a real killer. After I've talked around to a few of the other fishermen, they've been using them too and keeping them a secret. The easy way to fish them is to take a light spinning rod, a half ounce sinker, and a little short leader about a foot above it, and one of these rubber jigs. You just set the sinker right on the bottom, and the current holds the jig straight out from it about a foot off the bottom. And that's where the shad lives, just right up off of the bottom. All you got to do is set it down there in a slot where the water is medium speed and about four foot deep, and first thing you know, you've got some shad that look like these. The smaller one being the male and the larger one being a female, and once in a while you get one up to three or four pounds even. Go down there and get into these big fish, keep your tip up.
