And it did it by the astounding vote of 69 to 17. Not a single crippling amendment was added to the bill. This bill means a great deal that the public and private institutions of higher learning all over this country. It means that tens upon tens of thousands of young men and women are going to be able to get a college education who otherwise never would have been able to see the inside of a college. Standpoint of Oregon, one of the most important sections of the bill is the $250 million proposed in the bill. For our community, our junior college. Then the great battle was over scholarships. The bill provided for scholarships for needy students. The bill requires that there must be a selection of students so an economic need that they otherwise would never go to college. And we won that fight, although a great attempt was made to turn it from scholarships and alone. But as I pointed out in the bill, great corporations and foundations of America give millions of dollars worth of scholarships over the years on a pure grant basis, and they don't even make this terrible selection our need. As is required under this bill. The bill now goes to conference with the House. And it's very interesting to the people in Oregon. I'm sure you know that the chairman of the House conferees will be our congresswoman, Edith Green, who is chairman of the Subcommittee on Higher Education in the House. And I shall have the honor and privilege of being chairman of the Senate conferees.
