I've spent quite a bit of time here at my fly tying bench this week in preparation for a steelhead fishing trip on the North Umpqua. A lot of people ask me when I get ready to go, what kind of flies are you going to use? Well, here's four patterns that have worked for me in the past and these are probably the four patterns I fish with first this weekend. It's tough to say which individual fly is going to work, but if you've got these four, you'd be close. I've tied an umcraw special. The old standard, a skunk, a green-budded black bear, and a copper kernel. These four flies will put you in close to a steelhead if they don't catch you one. I've sat down here at the fly tying bench and tied these flies for just pennies apiece. If you go down to the local tackle shop to buy these flies, they'll cost you between a dollar and two dollars apiece, so if you go down to a tackle shop and buy a couple of these expensive flies, you better keep your tip up. The other claims $200,000 and $500,000. One reason the California judge declared a class action was because he's afraid the company will run out of money.
