Ruth talks about family abuse. She talks about her father and abuse. She talks about how she physically abused her children. Ruth is writing articles for the paper. Ruth talks about her mother’s marriage and death. Then her father dies 3 years later. They were from Pennsylvania Dutch background. Bern rapes Ruth. As a result of the rape, Heather was conceived. It was the beginning of the end of the marriage. Ruth began to have hallucinations of knives and cutting her child. She started therapy. She talks about her dysfunctional family. They have a four-day separation and Ruth stays at the shore. Ruth tells her therapist she is ready to leave her husband. She leaves with the children. She rents an apartment and gets a job. Ruth talks about different jobs that she had. She is laid off from her job as a research chemical technician. After 2 years of separation, Bern falls in love and gets married.
