His name is Sergei Vorontsov, a Soviet physicist on a six-month stay in Eugene as part of an exchange program through the National Science Academy. Sergei's research in this country is made possible by the cooperation of the University of Oregon and Jackie and Joel McClure, who met Sergei while studying in the USSR. Sergei admits he is not a diplomat or politician. His views are as an informed Soviet citizen conducting scientific research in the United States. I was particularly happy about the outcome of this case because, of course, in our system they're tried differently and the jury is certainly not bound by what happened in the Proctor case. In fact, if they were aware of it, they aren't supposed to consider that. They have to take this case on its own merit and it puts us in the ironic posture perhaps having this jury find the person we think was most culpable. The shooter and acquit him while Mr. Proctor was already convicted for being an accessory to those acts.
