He remains lodged at the Marion County jail in lieu of that $5 million bail. McGinniss was recently in court here in Lane County in a matter involving some of his local business dealings. The Arizona warrant accuses McGinnus of four counts of theft by conversion involving the alleged embezzlement of $1.6 million. According to information from Arizona investigators, McGinnis was involved in the development of a high-rise office and commercial complex in Tucson known as the Williams Center. Investigators say McGinniss formed a limited partnership with 12 other investors in 1977 and agreed to share any profits from the complex and its possible sale. The investigators claim that McGinnas took $1.6 million and rather than dividing it between the investors, diverted it into a company McGinnus formed here in Oregon in 1983. In the late 1970s, McGinnis was, according to published accounts, known in Tucson as a brilliant young businessman. He had a flair, reportedly, for purchasing unfruitful properties and turning them into money makers that could be sold for a profit. McGinniss' name first surfaced in the Eugene Springfield area in late 1982 and early 1983, when he and his wife leveraged a number of deals involving rental and commercial properties by making low-down payments and deferring monthly installments as much as possible. McGinnis was scheduled to appear back in Lane County Circuit Court this morning for failing to pay judgments against him in some local lawsuits. Since he was in jail in Marion County, he was unable to appear, and the Lane County matter may go on the back burner until the Arizona issue, at least in its early stages, is resolved. I'm in the mood for fruit simply because it's summer. I know those aren't the words to the song, but it is summer, and fresh fruit couldn't be better right now. Out of the area first, California. Oranges, Valencia oranges coming in, three points, four pounds per dollar, very nice. Seedless grapes, red and green, we've been talking about them for a few weeks. The quality continues to be excellent, prices hovering right around a dollar a pound. Tropical fruit, particularly pineapples are good this week. As low as 29 to 49 cents a pound, great sweet pineapple coming in now. Also out of California, plums and melons, lots of melons. Each week the price of melones has come down. Cassavas, cantaloupes, honeydews are running between 19 to 39 cents a pound, excellent quality, thick sweet-meated melons now locally what's happening. Well, raspberry season's over, blueberry season kind of in the middle, still getting some really nice blueberries running. Around $0.90 to $1 a pound. And the tree fruit is starting to come in. In fact, apricots just about finished up. It's a very quick season with apricot. But peaches and nectarines coming in locally right now. We're starting to get the red haven peaches. Prices are varying. And one thing I want to caution you about buying fruit. I'm going to hold up a couple pieces here. When you're shopping for fruit, always try to buy the larger fruit. The larger fruit gives you more meat for your dollar plus. The pits of the small fruit are about the same size as the pits in a large fruit. That's something to remember. Even when buying melons, which don't have pits, the larger the melon, the more meat for your money. Something to remember! Finally, with fruit, can it be summer's over? Not quite, but we're starting to get into some Bartlett Paris, the first fall crop of fruit. So, couple that with all the other stuff that's in season, and it's a great week to be in the mood for fruit. For eyewitness news, I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70979/file/156930#t=2353.86,2465.44
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70979/file/156930/transcript/88242/annotation/81
Speaker 34: Almost two years ago, November 12, 1984, 19-year-old University of Oregon student Michael Farrar stole a semi-automatic rifle from Anderson Sporting Goods, Incorporated.
