So that's sort of what our raw data looks like. Image that by using basically an x-ray microscope. There are no lenses for x-rays. So the computer is used to try to take the place of the lens and the microscope. And then we can construct this image. Then we can build into that image. A model for where the atoms are. So I can point at things here and ask their name. They'll tell me this is Adam's CV, amino acid number 14. There's all one long chain. This is just one piece of the structure. This is a bit of structure called beta sheet. Is reasonably flat. Construct this model, then you use the model to construct a better image for the electron density. You go round and round in circles until things don't change. So a successful approximation. Probably get rid of that thing. So part of what I'm showing here is the old structure is red and the new one is green.
