But whether it's a display you create yourself or one courtesy of a fireworks expert, there are a lot of hazards associated with their use. According to the U.S. Product Safety Commission, ten thousand people were treated in emergency rooms for firework-related injuries last year. So taking a few precautions could make a world of difference. First, if you're having your own backyard fireworks display, know what works are legal to use. Here in Oregon, residents are restricted to only some types of Class C fireworks. Your best bet would be to buy your fireworks from a reliable dealer who knows what he can or cannot sell. Second, let the adults do the lighting. It's always fun to have the kids involved, but sometimes it's hard for a child to react to a defective firework. But if you do have your kids help, make sure an adult is present. Finally, always read the directions for all your fireworks. Knowing how and where to light them often helps avoid serious injury. Now just as it's dangerous to have your own display, it can be dangerous watching a big fireworks display like the one held over Atsin Stadium in Eugene. If you are planning to attend, safety groups say to stay at least 500 yards away from the launching site and keep your eyes open for any falling debris while the display is going on. But most of all, enjoy the fireworks and the 4th of July holiday. Keeping these guidelines in mind should help make your 4th a safe and happy one.
