Happy May Day to y'all. May brings lower vegetable prices. Take a look. First of all, asparagus out of the Pacific Northwest in California coming in very good right now, as low as 59 cents a pound, depending on size. I won't tell you that the large is better than the small. Everybody likes their own the way they want it. But asparagus, try it this week. Other good values out of California. Broccoli and cauliflower, 49 to 69 cents a pound. Again, out of California, artichokes. Jumbo artichokes about 79 cents a piece. Smaller artichokes as low as $3, $4. Excellent right now. Yellow onions were coming out of Texas now. We're into new crop. Prices are dropping. They were about 79 cents a pound a couple weeks ago as low as 29 cents a pound this week. Last week I mentioned to you that it was going to be rhubarb awareness week. Well, rhubarb is coming in right now. It's rhubarb awareness week. This stuff is grown in Oregon. A lot of people avoid rhubarb because of the leaves contain exallic acid, which is poisonous, but rhubarb is excellent. You can mix them with strawberries, make a nice rhubarb strawberry pie, rhubarb jam, even rhubarb wine. So use some rhubarb because otherwise people won't grow it, and your kids will grow up and they'll say, Daddy, what's a rhubarb? Other fruit coming in now. We have Cinco de Mayo, you might want to have some tropical fruit, papayas, pineapples coming in. Very, very reasonably priced right now, very good quality, and also Mexican melons coming in the cantaloupes and they are a little high priced about a dollar, dollar and a half apiece, but in Japan, cantaloupes go for anywhere from thirty to forty-five dollars apiece. So when the Japanese develop a yen for a melon, they really develop a yen for a melon. Anyways, enjoy some fruits and vegetables this week. One example of Sherry Reynolds' use of her faith in Jesus Christ to solve political problems was expressed in a letter to the editor, where she advocated ending all foreign aid to godless unchristian nations like unbiblical Israel. It's certainly nothing new for politicians to combine religion and politics. In fact, Sherry Reynolds' opponent in today's primary, Senator Mark Hatfield, often talks about the influence of his faith on his political beliefs. But that's putting religion together with politics. Based on their use of the voters' pamphlet, Sherry and Jack Reynolds seem more interested in using the political platform provided by the election to advocate their brand of evangelical Christianity, which raises questions of whether that's a legitimate use of taxpayer funds. Over a million voters' pamphlets are printed, and one is mailed to every home in the state. At $500 a page for candidates, it's probably the cheapest form of proselytizing to be found, and the only one heavily subsidized by the state. The Secretary of State's office says it cost Oregon taxpayers about $5,000 to help Sherry Reynolds spread her message. They're coming right up the Willamette system. Now they're all not going to go right up here below Dexter Dam and keg up for you to catch. They're going to be strung out through the system. Some of those fish go up the Sandy Am, some of them up the McKenzie, and some of them up the main stem of the Willamette here. So if you're going to go out there and fish for those fish, I've had two or three people call me this week and say, how are you going to fish for those fish? Well, I've got a new system here that I'm going to try this year that's different than just bouncing eggs or backing plugs down the river. Lure Jensen put these together, and I'm going to try a couple of them, and I know they're successful in other rivers. But the real trick to this is the availability of sand shrimp. Now, what this is, is one of the big deep diving hot shots with about four feet of 15-pound test leader behind it, and a little birdie drifter with a great big hook, about a three or four-aught hook behind it. You hook one of those sand shrimp on that hook and hook him with his head downstream and his tail upstream. And then this big hot shot, you just put it out, let out some line, and it's a deep diver. It's going to pull you right down to the bottom. But with this bait hanging out about three or four feet below it, you back it down the river and back one of these shrimp right into one of those big Chinook's mouth. Now, if you're out there fishing for Schnook, you better not be doing it with a trout rod. You better have some tackle to hold a 20 or 25 pound fish. If you get one of these big fish on here in the Willamette, you're going to have a hard time keeping your tip up.
