That's where gold was first discovered at Sutter's Mill back in 1848. Down south, Columbia, a restored gold rush town. In between, there's six or seven other little towns, all of them old, all of them packed with history. What do people do up here? Well, mostly they seem to just hang out. They relax at one of the many bed and breakfast places, they eat at old, old restaurants, and they putter around looking for antiques and knickknacks. For the most part, the gold country is a low-key experience. Go ahead and leave your tranquilizers at home. You can probably count on the soothing historical atmosphere to keep you relaxed and content. That's not to say there isn't any excitement in these parts. You can always go to one of the melodramas in the area, or you can climb down and investigate one of the local caves. You can also go floating down the American River on a rafting trip. If you like the outdoors, the gold country is a good place for you. The Gold Country is also wine country. These tourists from England are sipping their way through a taste tour. There are more than a dozen wineries in this area. Some of the vineyards go clear back to Civil War days. What else does the gold country have to offer? About gold.
