The most highly publicized trouble crop this summer has been grass seed, but it now appears that Lane County grass seed growers won't do all that badly. It's true that the rains of July wreaked havoc with the harvest and ultimately cut into the yield. But in Lane County, the yield was so high to begin with that a disastrous year has been avoided. Things are more tenuous up in Lynn County, where the weather was a lot worse. It was another mediocre year for the Willamette Valley wheat crop. Again, the wet weather earlier this year is to blame. A disease called Septorius spreads when wheat leaves are wet for a long period of time, and even a new strain of wheat that's supposed to be resistant to the disease didn't fare too well. Peppermint yields appear to be all right, but mint growers will again face low prices for their crop, and it's not likely to be a moneymaker. Two of the most promising crops this year are two of the least well-known. Lack of manpower has forced the Eugene police, for instance, to ignore habitual bad check writers unless they write up to $500 worth of bad paper.
