That allowed the dumping of non-organic material such as concrete and rock fill. But other garbage, including straw from the Agri-Pak fire last January, has also been dumped there. Hi there. With the 4th of July weekend right here, the most popular fruit that people are going to take along on their outings or picnics, fresh watermelon. And in order to know how to pick a good watermelon, you need to know a little bit about them. They've been around for some 4,000 years. Now we used to think that watermelons first grew in Asia, but Dr. Livingston, I presume, discovered them growing wild in Africa. So we know that Africa is the original home of the watermelons. They were introduced to Europe in about the 16th century, later came to this country in about 18th century. Now, what are watermelones? Well, they're a very nutritious fruit. They're high in vitamin A and C. They're very low in calories, that's good. And because they're 92% water, why they call them watermelon, they have a cooling effect on the body system, which is why they're a great treat, particularly in the summertime. Now, how do you pick a good watermelon? Well, a good watermelons should have nice weight to it, depending if they're big or small. The skin should have a nice gloss. You can see that kind of glossy skin. And the bottom of the melon should have a yellowish kind of hue. A white bottom would mean that the melon is under ripe. Now, watermelons, unlike cantaloupes and some other melons, don't ripen after they're picked. So they're left on the vine until they're fairly ripe. This makes watermelon very perishable. So you want to buy your watermelon as fresh as you can and keep it as cool as you, can until you use it. It doesn't matter what you pay for a watermelon as long as you get a good one. So go out, have some good watermelon, have a safe holiday. For eyewitness news, I'm the watermelon man, Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70975/file/156926#t=2237.44,2352.62
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70975/file/156926/transcript/88266/annotation/131
Speaker 44: Sam DeMent is a cattle rancher at the Myrtle Point.
