I hope you all had a really nice, safe holiday. You know, this weather that we're having is not specifically to our area. It's all over the place we're having strange weather. And what this weather is going to do to us and our fruit and vegetable prices is going to make them all go up. Normally we get most of our winter produce out of California. We do get some things out of Florida and Texas, and anything that we get out of those places are going to be higher priced. For instance, cucumbers, zucchini, green peppers, tomatoes. Those four main vegetable items that come out of that area also come out of Mexico. We're going to see higher prices. Over in the fruit department, the Texas grapefruit were the main thing that were affected by the cold. Texas grapefruit are a good buy right now, but do expect to see higher prices. The oranges that we get on the West Coast are always from California. We very rarely see Florida oranges. So we won't expect to see too much of a price change in oranges, although you can expect to see higher prices on frozen orange juice next year, and there may be some ripple effect on the orange market. Other vegetables out of California, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, again, they're going up because they've had wet weather down there as high as a dollar a pound. So produce in general for 1984 looks like it's going to be kind of high priced. Have a good new year for Eyewitness News. He even served an extra couple of months when the legislature changed its meeting time. But what really sets Zenus Moody apart is that he was a member of the crew that in 1851 to 1853 surveyed the Great Oregon Territory. Moody himself never made much of his part in the survey. He joined the crew as a chainman shortly after it started work after his arrival from Massachusetts to make ends meet while he set his own course. So Moody was actually only a laborer on the team. But for the time, wages must have been fairly good. It was during the period of Gold Rush, and the leader had a terrible time hiring a crew. It was a time when carpenters were getting $8 a day. Butter was selling for 75 cents a pound, flour at $15 a barrel. The cost of provisions for the survey party obviously were high. And common laborers wanted $75 to $100 a month. Somehow, though, the party managed to work within the money budgeted by Congress the year before, and two crews, one east-west, the other north-south, traveled the terrain for the next couple of years. Because of Indian hostility, the northern crew was protected by armed guards. And where terrain was impassable, the crews did some guessing rather than actual sighting. But in the end, the lines of the Willamette Meridian were set. Moody went on to distinguish himself beyond that of laborer in the band that delineated those lines, culminating in the governorship in 1882. Along the way, he prospered in the mercantile business. A storekeeper who founded the town of Humatilla to be closer and thereby better able to supply the Idaho mines. Moody fathered five children. Two sons served in Congress. Legislative reapportionment, tax base, safeguards for the ballot box, separation of juvenile offenders from hardened criminals, an office of attorney general, and a stringent law against carrying concealed weapons were among things he wanted from the legislature. Moody did not get them all, but all are now part of Oregon law. In his last years, Moody recounted for a newspaper reporter much of his life. He skimped over his part in the Northwest survey. In light of his menial job with the survey crew and his later accomplishments, that is understandable. But in terms of today, he was part of the most important measurements ever done in the region. Every building, every road, every bridge, every airport runway, every property line that exists today, and every change made by every survey crew today is based on the line set out by the Willamette Meridian Party. This secluded glen is the starting point of that survey. And this is the Willamette Stone marking the meridian and baselines. Those lines stretch west to the Pacific, east to the Rocky Mountains, south to California, and north clear to Canada. And In this time, every single day, every single person in that area is affected by those boundaries. At the Willamette Meridian Marker in Portland, Oregon, this is Pat Wilkins, Channel 2 News.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70675/file/156621#t=2976.56,3164.08
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70675/file/156621/transcript/87637/annotation/139
Speaker 42: Carta Carr Kalsa, whose formal name is Janet Cooper, is a special education teacher in the Eugene School District and a member of the Sikh faith.
