The city's old collection system, which retrieved water from the Long Tom Slough and Kyle Springs, suddenly plugged up and stopped producing H2O. By early June, water in the community's three reservoirs dropped to red light crisis levels. And in order to prevent a total dry up, Monroe residents were put on water use restrictions while the Benton County Department of Emergency Services hauled water into the city from Corvallis. In conjunction with these efforts, the US Corps of Engineers gave Monroe a temporary permit to pump water directly from the Long Tom River, a source normally reserved for irrigation of crops. As Monroe water storage levels rose from this combination of factors, city officials last week took steps toward a permanent solution by drilling a well.
