You know, I really like it here in the summertime. June, July, and August are three months. It feels like the garden of Eden here. There's so much fresh fruits and vegetables, both locally, not in California. You can you never go hungry here. Anyways, over in the vegetable department, first off, out of California, some good buys. Head lettuce is coming down, very good quality, 39 to 49 cents a piece. Tomatoes out of California of all sizes, 39 to 59 cents a pound. Very good right now. They even taste like tomatoes. Carrots, about 25 to 39 cents a pound. And sweet corn. This this highlights out of the all the California produce. A good way to tell if sweet corn is fresh, take the ear and stick your thumb, nail or any nail, into the ends of one of the kernels. Don't use, don't do it in the middle of the kernel, the people won't like that. But use the end of the kernel. And if the kernel pops and squirts out, that means the corn is fresh. If it kind of just goes and doesn't kind of pop, that means the corn has been around for a few days. So that's a good way to tell if the sweet corn is fresh. Local vegetables, cauliflower coming in right now, beautiful snow white cauliflower, about 69 cents a pound. Green beans just starting. They are really good. You get them, and boy, hear that snap. That means they're nice and fresh. They're running about 69 cents a pound. Prices will come down. And a walla walla sweet onions are starting to come in out of Walla Walla, Washington. They're running about 19 to 29 cents a pound, and they are a very sweet onion. You can eat them raw. And next week I'm going to show you how sweet they are exactly how sweet they are. Over in the fruit department, California, great fruit coming in right now. Peaches, plums, nectarines. And the nectarines right now are sun grand varieties, showing a lot of color and a lot of flavor. They are about as sweet as they're going to be for the summer. I suggest you try some nectarines. Citrus out of California, Valencia oranges remain high. I told you they were going to stay high, and they are about 59 cents a pound. There are some good Cochilla Valley grapefruit out of California running about 59 cents apiece if you have to have grapefruit. Rounding out the California produce, seedless grapes, and look for the larger Thompson seedless. They're going to be a little bit sweeter, running about a dollar and a half a pound. Cantaloupes and honeydews about 39 to 49 cents a pound. Locally, the cherry season is upon us right now. Great being cherries, and cherries have been around for about 4,000 years. Not these though, these are pretty fresh. The cherries are very good right now, running about a dollar a pound. And my very favorite fruit, raspberries coming in. Strawberry season is just about over. There is still some gleaning going on, but the for the most part it's behind us. But the local raspberries are coming on right now and they are beautiful. And a good way, in fact, my favorite way to enjoy raspberries to take some vanilla ice cream and then put the raspberries on top of the vanilla ice cream. And the raspberries will kind of freeze a little bit, and it is just wonderful. Raspberries and vanilla ice cream. You gotta try it. For eyewitness news, enjoy those raspberries. I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70791/file/156741#t=119.83,275.409
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70791/file/156741/transcript/87537/annotation/2
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70791/file/156741#t=297.13,297.93
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70791/file/156741/transcript/87537/annotation/3
Speaker 3: To the ticket because the Republicans under Reagan have just left no I think that the Reagan administration has been the worst for women in the history of this country, for women and children. More and more often we keep reading in the regulations that if you hook certain species or size of fish, you have to release them into the stream unharmed. Well, I've been fishing on the Deschutes lately, and I've seen a couple of fish released into the river that wasn't unharmed. To pick a big fish up and get your fingers in its gills and hold it up out of the water and take pictures of it doesn't mean unharmed. That fish's chances are slim to none to making it. I've got a big fish on here, and I'm going to show you first of all how to land it and then how to release it unharmed. You get the fish in, you keep your tip up, remember. Get this fish in close to the shore, get it in shallow water where it lays over on its side, and then all you have to do is just kneel over the fish. You've got the fish still in shallow water, you've got him between your legs, and you can control this fish now. All you have to do is lay your rod down and you recognize its dorsal fins longer than two and a half inches long. It's a wild steel head in the Deschutes, and you have to release it. First thing you do is get the hook out of the fish's mouth and do it gently. Don't stick your fingers in the gills or try to hold the fish too still. Stand the fish upright as quick as you can. A fish laying on its side is not doing very well. Now we've got it. We want to take a couple of photographs of it. Back the fish out in the water. Hold it by the tail, right down by the tail. While the photographer's getting the camera ready, keep the fish in the water. When you're ready to take a picture of the fish, hold his tail, put your hand under his stomach and gently lift him. That makes a really good picture. If you tip the fish just a little bit where the bright side of its stomach shows, makes a real nice shot. Get the fish right back into the water again and keep him underwater. To hold a fish out of water is like holding you underwater during a wrestling match. And I guarantee you you won't last very long like that. Now to release this fish, all you got to do is get him out into the current, keeping him upright, and hold him still while he recovers. You see somebody take a big fish and run it back and forth in the water. Don't ever do that. You force water through his gills the wrong way, you're drowning him still. You get this fish out here in the water and you've held him upright a little while, he's caught his breath, and he'll make a couple of little pulls toward you. Hang on to him a little bit until he's completely recovered and he's strong. He makes a good pull or two toward you, and then all you have to do is when he makes one of those pulls, let him go. One thing you got to remember though, if you hook one of these big fish, you best keep your tip up. This is Terry Coleman for Eyewitness Sports.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70791/file/156741#t=2216.01,2359.0
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70791/file/156741/transcript/87537/annotation/98
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70791/file/156741#t=2382.66,2383.7
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70791/file/156741/transcript/87537/annotation/99
Speaker 8: At Oregon State University's Forest Research Lab, James Wilson is working with a team of scientists and engineers to determine what they can do to make wood products stronger.
