Accused co-murderer Charles Haynes was brought from his jail cell and sworn in. The scene reminiscent of a congressional crime hearing, defense lawyer Doug Melvin asking questions and Haynes answering, I'm not answering any questions from you or anybody else. True to his word, Charles Hayne refused even to answer whether he was married to Leonetti Haynes, who sat before him accused of murder. Fifth Amendment, he said, each time a question was asked. But the evidence the defense was counting on came out anyway in a tape recording, allegedly May, January 19th of this year. After a witness testified as to its authenticity, the jury listened for 23 minutes to the quiet voice of Charles Haynes as he took complete responsibility for the 1978 stabbing and butchering of his acquaintance Pamela Bruno. He said he stabbed Bruno in a drunken, drugged fog after she had jeered at his inability to perform sex with her. Haynes said he forced Bruno's husband to help butcher her and that Leonetti also helped to try to protect him. The jury heard Haynes say he knew exactly where the other pieces of the victim's body were, but he was not asked their location. Prosecutor Brian Barnes made much of that fact, asking one witness if the defense didn't want the body to remain concealed for fear it might hurt Mrs. Haynes' case. The witness denied it. Barnes also referred to several evident halts in the recording, but the witness denied it had been stopped during the interrogation. Charles Haynes' testimony is inconsistent on one important point. Although on tape he says only he handled the murder knife, he told a defense investigator earlier that Johnny Bruno had also stabbed Pam. The state contends Bruno and Charles Hayne concocted that story to get Mrs. Haynes off. But in the end, the twelve jurors alone will decide who is lying and who is not. As the interest rate keeps going up, so do produce prices. First, let's take a look at the vegetable market. We'll be paying higher prices for vegetables. Carrots is high as 49 cents a pound. Celery, almost a dollar a stalk. Cucumbers, 60 to 80 cents a pounds. Green peppers, over a dollar a pound in some cases. Spinach, 60 cents a pund. Prices are high. Good values this week. Broccoli and cauliflower, they're not cheap. But taking everything into consideration, they are a good buy. Lettuce prices have been stable, but watch out, they're going to go up soon. Tomatoes out of California, a little higher price, but good quality. Beware of the Florida tomatoes that'll be on the market soon. They're colorless and generally tasteless. Over in the fruit market, a a little bit better news. Good values this week. Apples, all coming in locally. Red, golden, delicious. Newtown and Granny Smith. Out of Texas, we're getting grapefruit. Ruby Red, very good quality, very reasonably priced, $4, $5, $6 for a dollar. Fairchild and Satsuma Tangerines. Fairchild are the tangelos. The tangerine, satsuma, meaning seedless, zip skin, very good and very sweet. Plenty of lemons and limes for your mixed drinks on the market, very reasonable priced, and also a good selection of pears. Well, this is season two be jolly. Unfortunately, we're not going to have a whole lot to be jolly about in the way of the fruit and vegetable market as prices continue to escalate. First, let's take a look at the vegetable market. Higher prices, carrots, Mexican Cucs. Notice the little waxy finish. That wax finish is put on to help the Cuc's hold up during transportation. It's not really all that bad. Tomatoes, a little higher. Zucchini out of Mexico, higher priced. Lettuce starting to go up. Good prices this week. Well, yams and sweet potatoes are three pounds for a dollar. Green onions and radishes are reasonable. Potatoes are reasonable, but vegetable prices are continuing to climb. Over in the fruit market, good news, bananas. They've been as high as 49 cents a pound. They're off a little bit this week. Why? I don't know, but they're about 30, 39 cents a pound this week, avocados still a good buy out of California, three, four, five for a dollar. Apples from the Pacific Northwest, all varieties, very good. Pears from the Pacific Northwest, very good and very reasonably priced. Finally, in the citrus market, which is where we have the most movement this time of the year, Texas grapefruit are coming in. Excellent quality, very reasonably priced, $4, $5, $6, $7 for a dollar. Naval oranges are starting to come in. Much improved than they were a month ago. Better flavor, better juice. And satsuma tangerines. And here I peeled one for you, and you can see that these are the seedless variety. The skin just zips off, and they segment out very nicely. And these run anywhere from 50 to 70 cents a pound. The latest figures show that fatalities on Oregon's highways are down slightly this year over last year. State police credit the double nickel limit. Still, the speed at which we travel along the highways is slowly creeping upwards. With the help of the federal government, the Oregon State Police are using an effective tool to keep those speeds down and our highways safe. It's reverse reading radar. One involves an anonymous letter sent to an employee of the Tri-Agency Animal Control in 1978. That letter apparently carried some kind of threat. At the time some vets were upset with Tri-Agency, they saw it as a public agency competing with private doctors. As yet there's no confirmed link between the letter and any veterinarian. We've also learned a third area of the investigation involves alleged economic threats against a salesman selling supplies to Tri-Agency. Our sources say the salesman was told to quit selling to Tri Agency or lose all his other local accounts. Several vets have confirmed being questioned about that matter. Others resent the secrecy surrounding the investigation.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70257/file/156201#t=3172.97,3218.06
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70257/file/156201/transcript/86262/annotation/102
Speaker 6: I really don't know.
